This week, I visit with Giulio Meotti, an Italian author and a journalist with Il Foglio, a national daily in Rome. Meotti's writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Commentary and in the Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth. Meotti graduated from the University of Florence, with a degree in philosophy. He has expertise on anti-Semitism, Israel, Islam, multiculturalism and the Middle East. His new book, "A New Shoah: The Untold Story of Israel's Victims of Terrorism," is a fascinating look at the relentless attempt to make Israel disappear.
Writer's Bloc: As a journalist based in Europe, what is your sense of anti-Semitism today?
Giulio Meotti: Europe is witnessing a wave of new and radical anti-Semitism and delegitimation of Israel's right to existence. It's a decade's phenomenon involving parliaments and universities, free press and entertainment, religions and public opinion.
In Europe the Jewish State has become the object of unremitting demonology; Israel has become the purveyor of all ills; Zionists are considered the instigators of every type of disorder. Just a few examples: The new pro-Hamas flotilla had its official conference in the building of the Journalists Association in Rome. In Norway hundreds of cultural personalities are promoting the boycott of Israel. In Spain, the Gay Pride Parade has just banned the Israeli participants from joining the march. It's impossible to make a list of the economic boycotts against Israel.
And let's remember also Ilan Halimi, a Jewish young man from Paris like many others, kidnapped and martyred without anyone intervening in the surrounding apartments of the housing projects from which the kidnappers came and went. They heard the screams by Halimi, without saying a word. It has been set in motion a mass hatred that has precedents only in Nazism.

Well, that’s certainly true. But it seems to have cycles of virulence.
But Helen Thomas WANTS the Jews to “go back” to Europe.
What’s really stupid is people that don’t realize the terrorist won’t stop with the jews. They want every non muslim either dead or converted. They even want to kill muslims they don’t feel are religious enough.
Ironic since the only country in the middle east that gays aren’t routinely executed is Israel.
This time there is a difference. Jews in Israel and the U.S. arm ARMED and many are combat veterans of Vietnam, Gulf War I and Iraq/Afghanistan.
Locked, loaded and ready!
The European Jews, again, are unarmed, unorganized for resistance, and poorly led. The Swastika, the Islamic Crescent and the Red Hammer and Sickle are at the door of western civilization and yet some of the canaries in the mine aren’t preparing for it.
NEVER AGAIN!
Another thing the Left and Islam have in common is profound insecurity. That insecurity eventually leads to violence as the successful must be butchered to make the butcherer feel pride in himself.
I don’t suppose it has anything to do with the rise in muslim numbers of those countries.
This is not a good time to be Jewish...
You are dead wrong! There has always been a current of anti-Semitism among Europeans, particularly those on the Left. it didn’t end with WWII, but is alive & well & showing it’s ugly head more & more.
It is widespread in Lefist elite cultural & academic circles in France.
The same in Britain; it is culturally accepted in certain elite circles to be anti-Semitic.
The movement to de-legitimize, disinvest from Israel is part of it. They are all Europeans, not Muslim.
The hard core political Israel hating Left & the elite culture do-gooders have formed what David Horowitz calls an “Unholy Alliance” with Radical Islam. Their rallying cause being the downtrodden Palestinians.
Nothing new here. Nothing surprising.
The exceptions are the Front National in France and a number of nationalist parties in the former east bloc countries that are openly anti-semitic. But that's no real surprise, is it?
What is so worrying and sad is that all major parties in the European democracies have moved towards at best a neutral stance between Israel and its dictatorial and murderous neighbours (Hamas, Syria, Hezbollah etc), and at worst a totally anti-Israeli position.
Of course there are a certain amount of coughing and harrumphing in all the European foreign ministries after the Mubarak and Libya fiasco ("We never really liked them, honestly") but that will soon be forgotten, and anyway everyone knows if just Israel would give up half its land and some more to the poor "Palestinians" all the Arabs would be nice again... /s
That’s actually funny. When Sharia takes power there, the queer-priders will be the first to be strung up by the ‘nads on a light post and zapped through their rectums with 500,000 volts/watts/whatever, and left sizzling in the breeze by the ragheads.
I think its both.
When there is that much hatred at a rally, there is bound to be anti-semitism.
