DEVELOPING STORY: Four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates have been killed, Fox News has confirmed. U.S. forces responded to gunfire aboard the yacht Quest at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, but discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors. Despite attempts to save their lives, all four hostages died of their wounds. We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest, said Gen. James N. Mattis, U.S. Central Command Commander in a news release. Two pirates died during the confrontation and 13 were captured and detained, along with two pirates already in custody. U.S. forces also found the remains of two other pirates already dead aboard the vessel and believe a total of 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking. The yacht Quest was hijacked on Friday off the coast of Oman and U.S. forces had been closely monitoring the vessel.

While a tragedy, one cannot help but wonder what was going through their minds when the decided to go through this region. Kind of like deciding "I know there's a minefield here, but I'll walk through it anyway and probably won't get killed."
One more reason we don't want our leaders going around apologizing for our country.
Youre missing the principle here. Why should ANY area of the seas be allowed to become a no-go zone because of Islamic pirates?
No, you missed it. Because it is a yes-zone for Islamic pirates.
Eric Holder will bring the 13 captives to New York for a trial with taxpayer-supplied lawyers
.
The trial will be in 2015. They will be held in a relaxed security prison with exercise yards, cable TV, mullah-approved meals, and MSNBC interviews.
They will be declared innocent by a jury of New York liberals who will reason that none of this would have happened until George Bush upset radical Muslims with his wars for oil.
They will sue the estates of the four Americans they executed because if the stress from the kidnappings and the Navy shadowing of their boat. They will win $10,000,000 because another jury of liberals will agree that Americans had caused them unimaginable mental stress and anguish.
Barack Obama will declare it a victory for the American system of justice and the oppressed peoples of the world. He will then make a visit to Somalia to apologize for America’s sins in failing to understand the war lords’ and pirates’ concerns.
In another universe, President Scott Walker will tell the Navy personnel capturing the 13 pirates to find shark-infested waters, put up a plank on the ship’s edge, and then walk them off the plank into the sea.
You’re right. We ARE at war with Somalia, and Somalia is winning.
A very sad day for America.
Since the hostages are dead, why are there any pirates still alive?
Obama protect us against Muslims????
Did Porky and Petunia start an airline or something?
America used to stand behind her people regardless. 'No man left behind' for civilians.
If Americans are sailing in international waters then damn right all means at our disposal should be employed to protect them. To do otherwise is craven - its what other nations do.
rope + yardarm
Apparently there is some stink that commercial carriers even for reasons of self-defense are not allowed to carry fire power, whatever it takes to blow these killers out of the water, and then go into a foreign port with their cannons.
There are FReepers on this thread that can put us up to date on this.

And here’s an article saying Obama authorized force, before the hostages were killed.

The cover up has begun?
“Barack Obama is preparing a strongly worded statement condemning the actions of the pirates. “
We ought to summarily shoot all pirates caught in the act and sink their vessels. Fine by me if we make it appear to be a “whoops, didn’t mean that” gesture, but if it happens consistently, I don’t think it will take pirates very long to figure out the game isn’t worth the candle.
Does that mean risking the lives of every hostage until pirates cease and desist? Yep, but the reality is that every ransom paid merely incents pirates to do more. It literally makes the world less safe for the next ship to come along. Better to break a few eggs and end this nonsense once and for all.
Yes, I’ve heard that this is a problem. Firearms were forbidden because of the possibility of mutiny, and it was actually the insurers who forbade them. But I vaguely recall that some ships now have a sort of “amory” and a “safe room” now which the crew can get to as soon as there’s trouble. These big tankers and freighters are nearly completely automated and have very small crews.
But the best solution is to get rid of the pirates. And any states or groups supporting them. This has become such a lucrative business that apparently Al Qaida is getting in on the action.
Negotiations had been under way to try to win the release of the two couples on the pirated vessel Quest when the gunfire was heard, the U.S. military said. Fox, asked by reporters about the nature of the negotiations, said he had no details.
Uhm - America doesn’t negotiate with terrorists.
The only negotiations should be via a 50 cal, or a 7.62 round. Period.
Don’t want to negotiate that way, don’t be a terrorist.
Obama to order trial in New York followed by a full pardon for the thirteen.
And when they do so they can get innocent people killed
