(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships will sail through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean on Monday, a Suez Canal official said, in what will be the first passage of Iranian naval ships through the canal since 1979.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has described Iran's plan to send the ships through the canal en route to Syria as a "provocation."
The official said the vessels would arrive at the southern mouth of the canal in the Red Sea's Gulf of Suez on Sunday. They would enter the canal in the northern convoy on Monday morning and complete the journey to the Mediterranean by evening.
An Egyptian army source said on Friday that the military, which has been running Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak was toppled from power on February 11, had approved Iran's request to send the ships through the canal.

Two Iranian naval warships went missing on Tuesday.........
This is the stuff of nightmares. Prayers for Israel.
Is that true? Do you have a link?
Future news for the 22nd.
I should’ve added the /sarc. Sorry.
Any USS Cole-like suicide boaters in the area looking for a contract?
LOL
As much time and effort Israel has spent over the past few years trying to appease the world just to survive, I have doubts about just how far they will go in this instance.
Hope I’m wrong and they do something to prevent this blatant act of war.
Two Iranian warships disappeared without a trace in the Mediterranean on Monday night. News for Tuesday morning......
Israel has several Dolphin diesel electric submarines, made in Germany. It would be a real shame if the Iranian boats were torpedoed. NOT.
It’s a provocation...and is meant to be so, because now Iran feels that it has the US government behind it.
Iran won’t attack because this is all symbolic. It means that Muslims rule, the US is supporting them, and while we may not hate Israel, we don’t care one way or the other.
Heh. Guess this serves as a rebuttal to all those pundits who thought Egypy was going to continue to be a stable peacekeeper in the ME. And I just love it that we’ve trained and funded much of their military and that that’s supposed to continue. That means this is being allowed by oscumbag - no repercussions for helping Iran sabre-rattle and provoke Israel.
Provacative and inadvisable, yes. Act of war, no.
“Hope Im wrong and they do something to prevent this blatant act of war.”
How is this an act of war http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/act+of+war ???? Military ships cross the Suez Canal all the time. Iran is obviously doing it to provoke and upset Israel but that’s not an act of war
To a small country surrounded by enemies and hated by the world, I would call this an act of war ... but that is just me. LOL!
It’ll get ugly only if Iran does something really stupid, because Israel isn’t.
I know what you mean, but in the technical sense, it’s not. Israeli ships went through it last summer to participate in excercises with the US Navy. I’m certain the Iranians had the same feelings.
