‘In practice, the state uses the reckless charge to discourage motorists from challenging citations by forcing a plea bargain that is favorable to the state.’
Its all about the $. Nice, glad to see the republicans are about a profitable business, just another way of getting your $.

Thanks for the warning.

Virginia continues its “war on drivers”...
Remind me to stay out of that state in the future.

Here is a direct excerpt from the Constitution of Viriginia:
Section 9. Prohibition of excessive bail and fines, cruel and unusual punishment, suspension of habeas corpus, bills of attainder, and ex post facto laws.
That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted; that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended unless when, in cases of invasion or rebellion, the public safety may require; and that the General Assembly shall not pass any bill of attainder, or any ex post facto law.
Apparently the sponsors of this bill are ignorant to their own state Constitution.
Citizens of Virginia, it is your
civic duty to fight any infractions you incur under this law should it pass. Take this case to the Virginia Supreme Court and beyond, if necessary. Do not let tyrants rule your lives.

Shouldn't speeding be a 10,000 dollar offense, and forfieture of your car?
I mean, we gotta cover the state budget SOMEhow.

Taxes and fines are NOT levied or imposed for the benefit of those taxed or fined.
Virginia sees its citizens, and especially non-citizen’s driving through, as a potential revenue stream through excessive fines - and little more.

The “money quote”:
“The committee also struck a provision ensuring that the reckless penalty is not applied to infractions detected by a red light camera”.
(Reckless driving fine) + (red light camera proliferation) = $$$$$$$$$$$

Sounds to me like the State of Virginia just gave their citizens marching orders to immediately start FILMING Public Servants and Public Employees engaged in Reckless Driving. Film the Cop rolling thru a red light to turn right and send to Motor Vehicle Dept and Court and Police Chief for immediate Charges to be filed. DEMAND IT, they are a danger to the community.

I’ve worked with this guy on gun rights and motorcycle rights legislation, including helmet law reform (which he supports).
It is disappointing to find out he is as much a two-faced, totalitarian nanny-stater as most of the rest of them...

In neighboring Maryland, there’s a new law requiring oncoming drivers to move from the lane adjacent to a stopped emergency vehicle that is flashing.
I-695, speed cameras are posted in construction zones.
I-95, the bridge and tunnel cops will pull you over for any reason, or a made-up reason. They are keen for drug busts and the ensuing fines and vehicle forfeiture.
It’s a jungle out there.

More of these laws are abusive towards motorists. A few years ago when my previous company ordered me to relocate to the DC area, I refused. Even though it is a little thing but VA' war on drivers was a big part of the decision besides the cost of living.
Here is one group that is dedicated to stopping the abuse and got rid of the national speed limit back in '96/'96.
