First lady Michelle Obama will be speaking out to remove barriers to breastfeeding, Politics Daily has learned, throwing the spotlight on nursing as a way to reduce childhood obesity.
This comes as the Obama administration in the past year has made several moves to encourage breastfeeding -- including a push for more flexible workplace rules and an Internal Revenue Service ruling on Thursday that breast pumps and other nursing supplies qualify for tax breaks.
Mrs. Obama -- who has spoken in public about nursing her youngest daughter, Sasha -- is going to tread carefully in what might be a sensitive area for some women -- and not use her bully pulpit to directly ask more women to breast feed.
"Breastfeeding is a very personal choice for every woman," Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama's communications chief, told Politics Daily. "We are trying to make it easier for those who choose to do it."
Last week, Mrs. Obama touched on breastfeeding strategy at a lunch with 10 print reporters who cover her to mark the first anniversary of her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign.
Looking ahead to what she will do in the second year of "Let's Move," Mrs. Obama said: "We also want to focus on the important touch points in a child's life. And what we're learning now is that early intervention is key. Breastfeeding. Kids who are breastfed longer have a lower tendency to be obese.
"We want to get into child-care centers, day-care centers, and start talking about how -- what kind of snacks they're getting there. We want to have those conversations at an earlier level. But those are just some of the things that you'll see."

I wonder if the rumors of first chimp being knocked up are true?? Gawd, I hope the hell not. That will give the chimp in the oval office at better chance at winning reelection in 2012.
well said, this woman has one bug fat ugly arse and face and yet she now runs around telling us to get healthy, how much we eat and now it’s about breast feeding
Kristina Schake the lead PR consultant for California First Lady Maria Shriver, has been named the new Communications Director for First Lady Michelle Obama
Do I want the government in my life? Absolutely not. At the same time, I feel that some FReepers are too hard on Michelle Obama. She’s trying to give blanket advice to make people healthier. I think she has the respect of many Americans and messages coming from her might get through (eat healthier, breastfeed, exercise, etc.).
I hate funding people’s unhealthy habits. My insurance costs are through the roof and I am sure taxes going to Medicaid are too. I don’t care how people live their lives, unless I’m helping to fund it. Until that stops, a little encouragement for people to be healthier is a good thing.
I think you and I deserve breastfeeding tax breaks, don’t you? Yours will be much bigger, of course, I’ve got about 10 years’ worth of compensation coming.
Heehee
I think I’m at about 13 years, on a quick calculation. But I never bought an expensive breast pump or anything, just the $15 one from Walmart when I had a baby who would take a bottle.
Yuck. Breast pumps are evil. Never used one. Of course, I had children who would NOT eat food until they could handle finger foods. :p
I auditioned for a game showin Burbank in 1994. The question I was asked was what breakfast food most remined you of your early chilhood......I said breast milk. Everyone in the room cracked up and I got on the show:)
I pumped, sometimes, for a couple of kids. Tom went to bottles about 9 months; I guess that was the last time I actually used to pump to feed, as opposed to just taking off pressure. I have enough milk for quadruplets, at least!
Pat (#6) was drinking grocery-store milk from bottles at a year-plus, and the last three boys never used bottles. Frank is (calculate, calculate) 20 months, more or less, and gets milk from nursing unless his dad or siblings give him milk in a cup.
Obama will find a way to tax mothers’ milk.
What the hell is going on? They are legislating morality.
::Facepalm::
Keep Big Brother Away From Boobs!!- Deregulate the boobies.
Yet another good reason to get breast implants! LOL
You mean she nursed her fat kid?
Nownwhy should we nurse our kids ? We don’t want them to be fat like sash.
SHUT UP MICHELLE ANTIONETTE !!!!
>> Here I thought that breastfeeding would be taxable as imputable dairy products.<<
It wont be taxed but they better not spill any because its now a hazardous substance.
