WASHINGTON, D.C. Montanas Congressman, Denny Rehberg, sponsored legislation to compel the State Department to allow the importation of 857,470 lawful M1 semi-automatic rifles into the United States. The rifles were relics from the Korean War, which are being sold by South Korea in an effort to raise money for its military. These rifles would be made available to the public as well as to museums and historical societies.
Whether its importing legal rifles or blaming legal firearms sales for the violence of Mexican drug criminals, this State Department has appointed itself as the spearhead of regulatory gun control in America, said Rehberg, a member of the Second Amendment Task Force. Americans should not apologize for our freedom. We shouldnt feel bad for insisting that our government respects our rights. And we absolutely should not be allowing the Administration to restrict the importation of legal guns on the whim of an anti-gun bureaucracy.
In its decision to block the importation of these rifles, the State Department claimed that the M1s could potentially be exploited... for illicit purposes. Possession of these firearms by Americans is lawful, and purchasers would have to be approved through the National Instant Check System used for all domestic firearms purchases.
Tester's press release linked the companion bill in the Senate. I'd like to see Obama veto it. They might have the votes to override his veto. The Coburn Amendment, allowing concealed carry in national parks, etc., had 67 votes in the Senate.
I want one ,, had to sell my M1 last year to pay some bills.
New from Springfield arms around $1500 give or take. Same with the M1A. Who wants a burned out M1 from Korea?

Wow. That’s a really weak argument. I mean, I don’t expect much from Hill-Dawg, but.... that’s pretty weak.
well if yer springin for the extra $1000 over the CMP price, I’ll take 3...8^}
Can get them chambered in .308 from SA as well.
How much better is the ‘06 over the 308?
I’m no expert, but I think the ‘06 hits harder the closer you are to the muzzle but the difference lessens down the line. The rounds are heavier so you can carry fewer of them than the 308s.
Getting shot with either will ruin your day.
I have a Remington 710 in ‘06 and it does me very well. I was thinking of moving up to a 7mm mag; you know, so I can hit that elk across a canyon that I have to hike two days to get to.
Everyone in town has one.
In those days war trophies were war trophies no matter which side
and were borne in the 4th of July parade.
I thought I had read before that they were talking about M-14’s not M-1’s.
If it killed a lot of NKs or CHICOMS, I would put it over my fireplace.
The article linked mentions M1 Carbines and Garands ... I’m pretty sure the Carbines are mostly “arsenal refinished” , the Garands are likely to be more original and with less wear than the Carbines ,, I think Korea switched from M1 to M14 and then to AR-15 LONG ago ,, these Garands have likely been packed away in grease for 40+ years.
Oh, thanks for that. You have good info.
SA =?
South America?
South Africa?
Saudi Arabia?
Springfield Armory?
Stoeger Arms?
Steyr? Skoda? Who else have we got?
***Who wants a burned out M1 from Korea?****
Because it might be the one my good Brother-in-law carried across Korea seven times, liberated numerous cities, re-liberated the same cities, used to kill lots of commies, while freezing his a$$ off while NK bombardments killed most of his men.
In other words, history.
“How much better is the 06 over the 308?”
The .06 has a bit more “oomph,” but really the ballistics are quite similar. The .308 is a shorter cartridge.

If they import them, there is a good likelihood that there will be many thousands of the rare and coveted International Harvester rifles in them.
