The HCG diet claims to be natural, promises to help you lose a pound or more a day and even discourages exercise.
But critics and medical doctors say it can be also dangerous.
HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin and is a hormone that is produced during pregnancy. It's detected in the urine of pregnant women.
HCG retailers say it works because it goes on the same concept that a pregnant woman's body will use stored fats to help send nutrients to the baby, even if she is not eating much.

I picked up some liquid HGC at GNC a few weeks ago. Not sure if it is the HGC or the 40 gallons of water they suggest you drink, but I have lost 10 lbs.
I was told earlier this week, that I could IMMEDIATELY take FIVE years off my age........ by simply leaving off the B.C. part...
What stuff did she get from Canada? How much?
Not to be disrespectful, but the concentration camps of Europe and the Bataan Death March proved that denying the body adequate food and nutrition can definitely drop the body weight by perhaps even more than a pound a day.
Obviously it depends on how obese you are and at what age, but even a very brief search shows that studies actually show a much bigger effect than the one you state.
Well duh !
You have to drop to 500 calories a day while on it.
There’s a sucker born every minute.
the “rotation diet” from years back was based on the premise that you could cut calories drastically for a few days....3 days IIRC....increase calories a bit for the next few days...and then continue on like that...your body won’t react to “starvation” if you feed it near normally periodically..
I went on this diet back in August 2010. Before the Hcg diet, I lost 22 pounds the old fashion way by exercise and balanced meals in the previous 8 weeks. I needed to lose an additional 20 pounds. So my friend introduced this diet to me. She said it is fast and easy, that should have been a clue. Nothing worthwhile is fast and easy.
Does it work? Yes and No. Let me explain...
I did lose the twenty pounds in about thirty days, but it was draining and very restrictive. You consume 500 calories a day, combined with the Hcg drops. However, once you go into maintenance, you must weight yourself every single morning and should you bounce up by more than 2 pounds even by an ounce, you must do a “steak day”. This was ok, but after awhile, all I wanted to do was go back to my counting calories and exercising where I did not feel a slave to the damn scale.
About a month ago, my husband researched some double blind studies where people who thought they were taking Hcg, but were really on a placebo LOST the SAME AMOUNT of weight.
You see, all this diet does is put your body into a Ketosis state and you end up burning the fat and this state also reduces one’s appetite. You have limited carbs and limited calories and Hcg no Hcg, the weight will come off.
The reason I think it ultimately doesn't work is that unless you change your eating and exercise habits to healthy levels, you will continue to have weight issues. My husband called it the “concentration camp” diet because of the small number of calories.
I am currently at a healthy weight, but I eat a balanced diet combined with daily exercise. Remember there are no free rides to a healthy body.
a lot of mercury too....
God help you my FRiend!
Did my ~9 yrs active with the 58th Combat Eng Company, 11th ACR - then A & C Co., 91st EN BN, 1CD. Hooah!
More to the weight topic . . . I'm now working to lose the 55+ lbs I added since I left active duty in Dec 1998. Ugh.
You have to drink pee?
well you know what?....she found out she was DIABETIC and her sugars were very high and had been high for some time.....you should see her legs....no muscle at all.....
btw...we are seeing more and more women in the hospital with many problems AFTER and sometimes years after having gastric bypass or similar...
be careful what you do to your body....
If a person burns 500 more calories a day than what they take in, they'll lose five pounds a month. That's plenty fast.
Essayons! Sappers lead the way!
I was with E Co, 1-67 AR and C Co, 2STB (4th Infantry Division). I’m now with 15 ENG CO, 19 ENG BN, 20 ENG BDE as of this month.
Did you change your diet? Exercise?
Last year I lost 38 pounds on the HCG diet (started 02-15-10; leveled off at 38 pounds lost by June 1st)...was pleased with the results; one year later; I’ve kept off 31 of the 38...ready to start it again, as I would like to lose 20 more pounds.
HCG raises T levels in men, it is used to simulate luteinizing hormones which tell the testes to produce more T.
I don’t know what happens for women but I know without a doubt nothing works better for weight control than a good diet and exercise.
I have a physician friend who went on this diet. It has bben several months and I can not tell he has lost a pound but I do know he has lost alot of money. Silly.
This is, or should be, all a prudent person needs to read.
