Returning champion Rep. Ron Paul has once the 2011 CPAC straw poll with 30% of the vote, with only one other candidate scoring a double-digit percentage: former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Trailing far behind but worthy of note were also former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson and New Jersey Chris Christie, with the loudest potential candidates Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum, barely receiving mention.
Paul, who received ebullient praise from the crowd with a speech slamming nearly every important social and neo-conservative policy point, is used to this sort of praise at CPAC, so his win is not particularly surprising. Plus, with the boycott from family values groups and the inclusion of more civil libertarian/diversity groups like GOProud, the population voting in the straw poll was necessarily tailored to this sort of outcome. Nonetheless, the inclusion of Gary Johnson in the top three a sort of Ron Paul light who openly advocates for the legalization of marijuana and tying with a diametric opposite in both style and substance like Gov. Christie raises some eyebrows.

Of course Ron Paul would come out on top in a convention poll.
There’s a big convention poll coming summer 2012.
Even if Paul wasn’t a loonbag over foreign policy, the dude would be 77 1/2 years old when he took office, if he won.

I think his position is that tax dollars shouldn't be used for that, along with a variety of other things.

But the founders of this country said that the protection of innocent life is the primary reason for the existence of government.

I am pro-life personally and so is Gary Johnson.

By the way, don't pretend that Johnson is merely pro-choice for states like your libertarian hero Ron Paul, or Sarah Palin, or John McCain. He's an out-and-out pro-child-killing pol.

If protecting life isn't a "legitimate role" of government, there is no reason to have government.
Your opinion of the "legitimate role" of government results in a murdered baby EVERY 24 SECONDS.
And as I pointed out there's a big difference between the attendance at a substantive convention and the "come one, come all" attendance at a meaningless policy gathering. The Paulestinians won't have the same edge in numbers at the 2010 GOP convention with credentialed voting delegates.
