Mexican drug cartels hold 12-year-old for ransom – in New Mexico
Washington Examiner ^ | 2/10/11 | Barbara Hollingsworth

Thugs working for Mexican drug cartels kidnapped the 12-year-old daughter of a ranch foreman in New Mexico, holding the girl for ransom until her family and neighbors came up with $80,000 for her release. They didn’t dare call law enforcement for help because of very real fears their calls would be monitored by the kidnappers using sophisticated communications relay stations erected on U.S. public lands.

That was one of the most shocking stories four congressmen heard last week while visiting hot spots along the New Mexico, Arizona and Texas border, where specific American law enforcement officers are being targeted for assassination and high levels of violence, vandalism and threats against Americans are increasingly common. One rancher showed the lawmakers a photo she had taken on her property of a camo-clad drug runner brandishing an AK-47.

“The town hall meeting we held with ranchers in New Mexico was very lively,” Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., told The Examiner. “The drug smugglers use scanners, cell phones, GPS systems and other equipment that is better than anything Border Patrol or the local deputy sheriffs have. We could actually see them watching our Border Patrol agents from points on high ground” in Mexico.

There were 900 attacks on Border Patrol agents last year, Royce said, and 91 assaults on Customs Agents in the Tucson sector alone. Narco traffickers have become so bold that they shot up a U.S. Customs station in the process of intercepting a big cocaine shipment.

Makes you wonder how much more unreported crimes are occurring along our border.

Agreed. Mexico has lost control of the situation. Is it time to start conducting military operations across the border? Honest question.

I think there’s precedent for the United States to say to a foreign power, “Your people are harming our people. If you won’t handle it, we will. Clock’s ticking.”

Does anyone have information on this? I find it hard to believe, but I'm constantly surprised.

Dem and RINO admin will not acknowledge this problem because it will affect any attempts to push amnesty. This is one of the reasons why the Obama adminstration will not highight the drug cartel violence in Mexico and may try to clamp down on any publicity on crimes by drug cartel in US.
Nightmare scenario is drug lords are trying to get their family out of Mexico. If their kids attend US public schools, it is plausible a drug hit team may target the kid and try to kill him in the school yard. If any American student happens to be in the bullets way, he or she will be killed along with the intended target. That is how things are done in Mexico and can spill over into US.
As long as there is an incentive to push for illegal immigration amnesty, nothing will be done until the violence/body count is too high to ignore (ala first major public massacre). Potential voters and cheap labor takes precedence over safety of border citizens.

True, but the United States needs leadership and we don't have that vital ingredient. This current government will do nothing about this problem, until such time it sees tangible political benefit.

I knew they'd start using former American territory like this. When it's occupied by foreign entities, it's no longer "U.S. public land."

The kind of fence that we would need would be too expensive to put up along the whole border.

Foriegn invadors should be a military problem. What we need is soldiers with guns and a kill zone extending a mile into Mexico along the entire border.

The last time the Mexicans were bringing their criminality into the US, Black Jack Pershing marched 5000 soldiers around northern Mexico for a year.
