Silvio Berlusconi 'has made Italians a laughing stock'
The Telegraph(UK) ^ | 2-8-11 | Nick Squires

"Our young people abroad are called 'bunga bunga' Italians and that is not a flattering definition," the Famiglia Cristiana (Christian Family) magazine said in an editorial.

Antonio Sciortino, the editor, said Italy's image had been "damaged around the world" as a result of the so-called "bunga bunga" scandal, in which Mr Berlusconi is accused of paying for sex with "several" prostitutes during wild parties at his villa near Milan. He has denied any improper behaviour.

My opinion of them was actually raised by his antics. For an old guy, he's in remarkably good shape, from the images of the girls.

Every politician is entitled to an I never had sex with that woman moment. Silvio, at his age, is entitled to a few of such moments.

The gypsy woman told my mother
Before I was born
You got a boy child’s comin’
He’s gonna be a son of a gun
He gonna make pretty womens
Jump and shout
Then the world wanna know
What this all about
But you know I’m him
Everybody knows I’m him
Well you know I’m the bunga bunga man
Everybody knows I’m him

I got a black cat bone
I got a mojo too
I got the Johnny Conqueroo
I’m gonna mess with you
I’m gonna make you girls
Lead me by my hand
Then the world will know
The bunga bunga man
But you know I’m him
Everybody knows I’m him
Oh you know I’m the bunga bunga man
Everybody knows I’m him

On the seventh hours
On the seventh day
On the seventh month
The seven doctors say
He was born for good luck
And that you’ll see
I got seven hundred lire
Don’t you mess with me
But you know I’m him
Everybody knows I’m him
Well you know I’m the bunga bunga man
Everybody knows I’m him

...with apologies to Willie Dixon and McKinley “Muddy Waters” Morganfield

The final photo was of his wife. The caption read:

Veronica Lario, 52, Berlusconi's long suffering wife of 20 years and mother of his three children. They started an affair while he was still married to first wife and he saw her topless on stage

Given how he began their relationship, was she expecting anything different?

I am more worried about a minority of anemy within that try all sort of lurid tricks to subvert a popolar election.

A mildly conservative politician, continuosly assaulted by the overwhelming socialist media, is practically arrested from doing any governing improvements.

I thought it was Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (31 August AD 12,– 24 January AD 41), commonly known as Caligula, who made Italians a laughing stock.

The Italian left will never forgive Berlusconi for destroying their grand plan to take power in Italy in the early 1990s. After repeated rejections by Italian voters, the Communists decided to destroy the center-right opposition, leaving voters no alternative. The left-wing judiciary indicted almost all leading Christian Democrats as well as the leaders of the other smaller centrist parties, decapitating the center-right. As all of the center-right parties disintegrated, the Communists were supposed to sweep to power unopposed. Berlusconi was able to cobble together a new center-right coalition, creating a new party - “Forza Italia” - from nothing, and defeated the left in the elections of 1994.

He has been in and out of power (more in than out recently) ever since.

This renewed attempt by Communist judges, left-wing Italian media and “conservative” British publications like the Economist is the latest attempt to win by non-democratic means what the Italian voters have repeatedly rejected- a permanent left-wing Italian government.

Berlusconi is by no means perfect, however I will be forever grateful to him for defeating the Italian Communists back in the 1990s.

What's this magazine's take on what Obama has done for the US? Better the laughingstock than the cryingstock. (I just coined that I think)

I've lived in Rome a little over a year, and that's the sense I get too.... though I think he survived the no-confidence vote because the people realized that there are no other viable alternatives at the moment.
