Palin says Obama's policies have U.S. on road to ruin

Republican Sarah Palin said on Friday an explosion of government spending and debt under President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats had put the United States on "the road to ruin."

In a tribute to former President Ronald Reagan, the potential 2012 White House contender said leaders in Washington had lost sight of the values that made Reagan a Republican icon and a hero to conservatives -- a belief in limited government, low taxes and personal freedoms.

"This is not the road to national greatness, it is the road to ruin," Palin said of the growth in government spending, budget deficits, joblessness and housing foreclosures under Obama. "The federal government is spending too much, borrowing too much, growing and controlling too much," she said.

Palin said Obama had revived the era of big government, and she ridiculed the infrastructure spending and investment he outlined in his recent State of the Union speech.

"The only thing these investments will get us is a bullet train to bankruptcy," the 2008 vice presidential candidate said in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, California, part of two days of festivities marking the late president's 100th birthday.

Reagan served two terms as president beginning in 1981, and his belief in limited government, reduced taxes and military strength has been the dominant political doctrine of his Republican Party ever since.

His legacy gained new momentum in the last year with the growth of the conservative grassroots Tea Party movement, which has focused on a push for limited government and reduced government spending.

Like virtually all Republican Party leaders, Palin and many of the other possible Republican candidates to unseat Obama go to great lengths to stress their belief in Reagan's principle.

But Palin said the Republican search for the next

I'm willing to play fair and give you a graceful way to back down.

Just stop moving the goalposts, and admit that you exaggerated in your earlier posts, mmmkay?

Keyes is more cut out as a cheerleader / explicator than a serious candidate: he over-intellectualizes too much for the stump. And since he is conservative, he'll get trashed or ignored by the leftist "intelligentsia" anyway, while still aiming over the heads of hoi polloi.

Cheers!

I’m not in a tizzy. The subject of this thread is her speech honoring Reagan. You’re asking questions that don’t apply to this thread, or her speech.

Should Reagan not be honored? Should Palin not participate in that? Should her speech honoring Reagan be all about her and her “specifics”?

So, if Sarah Palin says, rightly, that the country is on the road to ruin, and someone agrees with her and then asks her supporters questions like, “Does she understand how we got here?” or “Does she understand what is the right road that we should be on?” or “What is she going to do to help get us back on the right road?” or, “Can you point me to some evidence that she actually understands how things really are?” that’s now called “trolling”?

Is that what “conservatism” has become?

Personally, I call that a recipe for disaster. Not just for her political ambitions. For her followers.

The rest of us already knew that. But admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery... ;-)

Pretty unique situation they have up there, budget-wise. Every state wishes it could be so blessed.

Socking away that sort of revenue ain't a bad thing to do, although, eventually if government collects it they will spend it. If I was an Alaskan I would hope they would spend it on permanent infrastructure, not short-term stuff or vote-buying.

Spot on again. Obama is trying to destroy not only this country but Western Civilization.

RE: Elvis: Yeah, that’s because you have respect for the king. /s
Notice I put his title in lower case, in deference to the One True King, Jesus. /s

Actually, I saw a documentary on Elvis where one of his musicians recalled that when some fans at one of his performances held up a big banner that said "Elvis is King!", Presley became very serious and angry, and admonished them from the stage: "NO! Only Jesus Christ is King."

I also read in a bio of Natalie Wood that she dated Presley for a bit and found him interminably boring and straight-arrow, not a bad-boy partier AT ALL; she preferred her men a little wilder! Presley was a hamburger-and-a-movie type date, with a kiss on the cheek saying goodbye at the door, home before midnight.

From everything I've learned or heard about the real Presley, recreational drugs and the rock-star lifestyle of hard partying were NOT his scene; he was more likely to keep his band members up all night long singing Gospel tunes. The drugs Presley stupidly did -- and he did them sure enough -- were prescription drugs that his doctors condoned. (Moral of the story: doctors are as fallible as anyone else; your own common sense is sometimes the best physician you've got -- remember it and you might live longer. And if you can find a doctor who advocates common sense over drugs, cherish him/her and count your lucky stars.)

No, I was never a big Presley fan; I don't have any of his albums and don't plan on getting any. But a few years ago, musing over the pop music of my youth, I realized that I had always taken Presley for granted, made fun of him with everyone else, yet the guy was among the few responsible for many truly beautiful songs from the otherwise mostly horrible 70s.

I’ve said it before and will say it again. Alan Keyes and Sarah Palin are two politicians I’d have be friends. I think they both have a lot to learn from each other. Alan can give Sarah a master class on conservative principle. Not that she’s ignorant, just that he’s that good. And Sarah can give Alan a master class on successful retail politics. And if he’s ever going to run another campaign in his life, he desperately needs that.

No doubt, eventually. If Palin runs for president, I expect her to sign on to something like Mark Levin's proposal to amend the constitution to require balanced budgets and a cap on spending as a percent of GDP except for extraordinary cicumstances (like declared war). As Levin says, he's very reluctant to amend the constitution, but he sees no alternative to force spending discipline in Washington. If/when she becomes a candidate is the right time to do that, not before.

Heard Reagan’s son Mike on XM Patriot radio this morning.

He said his father spoke in parables to teach, while politicians today speak in soundbites but no story.

Palin would be advised to do more of that, to inform, persuade and convert folks who have not yet joined her support.

Santa Barbara is beautiful this time of the year. Sunshine, daytime temps mid 60s.

The bottom line is that no other Republican has taken on Obama attempt to backrupt us like Palin has...Mainstream Gop’rs have been nearly silent.

I expect her to

It seems to me that Mrs. Palin is one of those figures that folks feel free to project their hopes and dreams and wishes upon. It's one of the luxuries enjoyed by politicians who speak in vague generalities and pander to their target audience.

Thanks for the decent, respectful conversation, though.

Palin and the Republicans need to open up on Obama’s Foreign Policy.

START deal horrible deal.
Losing Egypt, if not the whole Mideast. (nothing to say about Iran protestors.

Now, he is literally giving UK Nuke secrets to Russia.

...not to mention his dealings and acceptance of Muslim Brotherhood both domestic and foreign.

Totally unnecessary. I've watched her carefully for 3 years and have closely studied her actual accomplishments going back much farther than that. I don't blindly put wishful expectations on politicians.

Sorry I bothered with you.

Really? Then how do you explain her pro-choice for states position on abortion? It is identical to Gerald R. Ford’s, Ron Paul’s, and John McCain’s phony positions, the polar opposite of Reagan’s position and the stated position of the GOP platform since 1984.

It’s a substance-less position which gives politicians cover to do nothing about the abortion holocaust, and gives away the most important core principles of the republic.

Why is she a judicial supremacist? That fallacy is destroying the foundations of liberty more than any other thing I can think of, at every level and in every part of the country.

Why does she support John McCain’s completely deceptive views on borders and amnesty?

Why does she support the Law of the Sea Treaty, a sovereignty-killing monstrosity if there ever was one? Reagan killed it, we thought, until Bush revived it.

Does she support the reining in of the out-of-control leftist education establishment, which is propagandizing the next generations? I haven’t been able to find any evidence for it.

If you’ve been paying such close attention, maybe you can educate me as to why my concerns about real conservative substance don’t matter.
