The astronaut husband of wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has made his choice. He's headed to space in April.
An official close to the space shuttle program confirmed Friday morning that astronaut Mark Kelly will be aboard Endeavour for its final flight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not yet been made public.
Kelly is holding a news conference at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday afternoon.
...Kelly, 46, spent the past month debating whether to step down as commander of Endeavour's two-week mission. As he agonized over the decision, NASA named a backup commander, Rick Sturckow, who joined the crew for training.
Liftoff is targeted for April 19.

Good for him!
I can speak from experience that his real work with his wife will start once she leaves the rehab center. Now, while she is well cared for, is the best time for him to accomplish what he can.
Are they really married or just shacked up?
I note they have different last names.
May be the last chance for an American to go into space in our own ship for a long time.
Why it was only yesterday that he was telling us he has begun to believe in fate, er faith.
The man is a tool.
They also had different home addresses. He lived in Texas, she, on occasion lived in Arizona.
According to SpaceX they have to make 14 successful flights with the Falcon 9 rocket before they can send people up. Two down with 12 more to go.
Too much spare time on your hands...?
Excellent news. It’s probably his last chance.
I still do not appreciate his answer when, immediately after the shooting, someone asked if his wife had any enemies and he replied, “Yes, the entire Tea Party.”
Waiting for an apology as one would have been immediately demanded of a Republican who blamed a progressive.
Just sick of her family blaming the tea party for her shooting.
Particularly since Giffords herself bragged on owning a Glock and being a pretty good shot.
They are married but to tell you the truth he seems to be a media hog. I could care less about this guy and yet he is always in the news and in our faces.
I think that was Giffords’ father. But Kelly’s twin on the ISS said something stupid about the Tea Parties too and Kelly didn’t correct it.
I’m sorry his wife got shot but I can’t stand him. He looks like Dr. Evil.
They both are typical of “Modern Power Couples”. He seems to be a “NIRO(Navy in rank Only)”. Probably both of them the type that have “Carefully” “Cultivated” their “Career Paths”.
Oh. Sorry. Thought it was him. Knew it was someone close but I do not recall anyone in the family who called for calm and not to jump to WRONGFUL conclusions.
I would provisionally agree.
I don’t know much about either of them but that’s the impression I got.
That is so true. None of them sought to correct the misimpressions they helped to create, unlike Christina Green’s dad who correctly stated the guy was a nutmeg and it wasn’t the tone of the discourse. Now that’s class, after all, his daughter died because of Giffords’ public event and her lack of security preparedness.
He’s been out of training for a month. Is there enough time to make up for that? (He’s been up a few times before, so maybe the lost training is not that big of deal for him?)
His residency is based out of Houston.
I wonder where she spent her time when she wasn’t in DC.
It would be ironic if she spent 3 weeks a year in Arizona and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when Jared went off.
