Sen. Graham: Raise retirement age to 69 (McLame's lap dog tells 50-somethings to keep working)
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2011-02-02 | Michael O'Brien

Congress should cut a deal this year to raise the retirement age to 69, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said.

Graham, who'd flirted last month with an increase in the retirement age to help address Social Security's solvency, backed a phased-in hike in the retirement age.

"As I said on 'Meet the Press,' I'm looking for a process that will lead to a vote on saving Social Security from bankruptcy this year, that would adjust the age," Graham said on WVOC radio in South Carolina.

Graham referenced as his model the deal cut between President Reagan (R) and Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neill (Mass.) in the 1980s that provided for a gradual increase in the retirement age to 67.

"Ronald Reagan went from 65 to 67 with Tip O'Neill … we could use that same type system, to go from 67 to 69, for people under 55," he said.

I agree, but the only way the people will allow it to be taken from them ... is if they are given a lump sum to compensate them for what they paid into the system.

THAT would work, since most people can't see past next week... the thought of instant cash NOW .... would do it.

Based on current life expectancy tables, they should raise the retirement age to 75. Social Security is a welfare program and not a retirement plan.

YOU may work as long as you wish....I can tell you that lifting and turning and positioning 300 pound patients in a hospital, getting them in and out of bed, drawing up minute amounts of IV medicine, and generally being on your feet for 8 hrs is NOT something you can do very well into your 60's although I know people that have too....

unlike union firemen who can retire early in their 50's, most hospitals do not afford the mostly female nursing staff that priviledge...

so you govt pensioners, you railroad pensioners, and the rest of anyone with money coming out of your ears may keep working for your entire lives...

there are those of us who've worked well over 30 yrs and we will , one way or another , get our dang SS money back at a reasonable age...

You should have “0” in all of your collumns, since nothing is likely to survive the next wave of failures generated by sovreign debt collapse.

Geez Dave, you're really bumming me out.

I was diagnosed with Leukemia five years ago at age 52. The Doctor told me I could expect to live another ten to fifteen years. When he gave me the news, my mind clicked, ten years gets me to 62, (early benefit), fifteen makes it to 67, (full SS retirement age).

All I said to him after he gave me the news was, “you mean I'm getting ripped off by SS and Medicare”? You gotta go sometime, but the Gubmint stealing $250,000 from me for forty years without paying me back one red cent of principal or interest really pisses me off.

My Wife and the Doctor were both taken aback by my response, but I am a realist who understands that life isn't fair. Too bad many of our fellow Citizens think the Gubmint is there to make it fair and they do that that by stealing money from others.

Democrats hope you die so they can give your money to their idiotic constituents who have no idea where the money comes from. They are robbing my grave while I'm still above ground.

But it means that Boomers cheered on higher government spending that raided those SS tax monies.

Collective guilt and group identity are leftist constructs. I'm supposedly the oldest of "Generation X" and am as sick of purported "Boomer" crap as anybody, but not all "Boomers" were spendthrifts, just the government was, consistently.

The SS "trust fund" was raided for every Democrat pipedream to come down the pike, not by "Boomers" but by politicians who may or may not have belonged to that artificial categorization. Now they're feigning surprise that it's insolvent, like that's new news. Fools, the lot of them.

I agree with Lindsey Graham for once. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme destined for destruction. The quicker we learn that and make adjustments, the better.

Not much of a planning guide there. we all plan based on assumptions. I just posited one assumption (OK, a high-percentage assumption).

I am not the gold hoard and basement full of canned beans kind of guy, so I have to temper my assumptions with at least a LITTLE optimism.

But it is possible the former may get the last laugh... But if the entire financial world collapses then it will be such a crappy world that mere survival will be a pretty meaningless existence anyway.

I’m sorry, but they pay the GAS TAX and TOLLS just like EVERYONE else.

Stuff it with your sick, entitled, attitude. Your generation chose to spend YOUR Social Security money, and STOP BLAMING my kids and grandkids for it.

The worst drawback (well, maybe not the worst, but significant, anyway) with this idea is that the old guys (and gals) don’t retire and get out of the way for the kids coming in at the bottom.

“Your beloved big government CHOSE to spend that money...not the people...they had that money taken from their checks...then the government spent it so people like you can have ‘free’ stuff...”

Sorry, but my KIDS and future GRANDKIDS were TOO YOUNG to vote for the idiots that spent that money.

YOUR GENERATION (and my generation) voted to spend their Social Security savings on all that social crap, whether we like it or not.

GET IT!!!
