Obama Approach to Mubarak Exit Questioned as Violent Clashes Erupt

For the most part, President Obama's cautious, but firm, tone has won praise from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Though the Obama administration was clearly caught off guard by how quickly a regime's ouster in Tunisia inspired uprisings across Egypt and other Middle Eastern capitals, the president was applauded for striking a delicate balance.

He did not take sides from the outset, but at the same time also urged President Hosni Mubarak to fix the problems in his broken government. When the momentum shifted further away from Mubarak, so did Obama, telling the 30-year ruler it's time to step aside.

But something went wrong. Though Mubarak announced Tuesday night he would not seek re-election, the vigil-like scene from that night has given way to a bloody series of clashes between protesters and pro-government supporters.

Analysts and diplomats say the administration now must be even more cautious about what it says publicly, and they worry that the president may have slipped in the way he pushed for Mubarak's exit.

Waging diplomacy in public is often unwise.

I don't mean to spam all the threads, but this comment really belongs here too.

I don't get it either.

Last night, in the hall, when Obama was reading the Teleprompter to us, why wasn't the message one of victory and calming words. Who wrote that stuff in the teleprompter?

Obama could have read a message that said, "Peaceful demonstrations can bring positive changes. The people of Egypt have won the first step. President Mubarak has agreed to fair and free elections, and he will not run in the elections in September. The demonstrators have won. Now, it's time to define the terms for the leaders to be elected in September, and to search for the best candidates. The people of Egypt need to look forward, not just to this election in September, but to an orderly transition of power, even in the next election."

He could have invited everyone to calm down, come to the table, and start working on developing candidates and positions for the elections in September.

He could have declared victory for the protestors.

Instead, he incited them to more violence. He and his administration said they Mubarak to start the transition NOW. He's asking for a power vacuum, and that will be filled by the next tyrant. That's not a solution.

He is no statesman, he is an agitator. Or I should say, the crew behind the teleprompter are agitators.

This Fox News reporting is garbage. The Obama administration was not caught off-guard by the Tunisia overthrow. They weren’t surprised by the situation in Egypt. The Obama adminstration and all of their tentacles were in on the protests.

When is someone in the media, or in the House, or in the Senate going to expose this criminal terrorist enabler we have for a president?

It is infuriating to see how Obama gets away with this global muzzie community agitator crap!

While Egypt isn't a colony, the communist agenda seems to fit very well with what Obama has done.

43) Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.

If Mubarak leaves now there is no one ready to step into power in any orderly sense and a struggle will take place between the most aggressive factions in an attempt to seize power.

The only one I’ve seen on FOX willing to expose Obama and his radical pals and the islamic partnership in this mess is Beck.

Not to mention the pain he’s going to inflict on America as a result. The democrats are doing all they can to make sure it hurts when it comes.

Interestingly enough the communist party USA is already hoping that the Suez canal will be used to pressure America into communist “change”.
