Israel Says No To More Egyptian Troops In Sinai
Jerusalem Post ^ | 6 Feb 2011 | Yaakov Katz

Posted on Sunday, February 06, 2011 6:13:45 PM by edpc

Fearing a complete breakdown of the peace treaty with Cairo, the government last week refused a second Egyptian request to allow it to deploy more military forces in Sinai, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

As first reported last week by the Post, Israel allowed the Egyptian military to deploy units in Sinai for the first time since the signing of the peace treaty in 1979, in response to growing anarchy in the country. Two battalions – amounting to about 800 soldiers – were deployed in the Sharm e-Sheikh region and around Rafah, which is split between the Sinai and the Gaza Strip.

Wow. That IS very telling. Israel is expecting the worst....as they probably should. The peace treaty will not last.

Thanks for the post Uncle Ike.

Egypt’s Ire Turns to Confidant of Mubarak’s Son

CAIRO — As Egyptians turned their anger on symbols of the state late last month, torching police stations along with the headquarters of President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party, they reserved a special hatred for a garish building with black tinted windows in an upscale neighborhood, setting fire to it three times.

It belongs to a steel tycoon and ruling party insider named Ahmed Ezz, a close friend and confidante of Mr. Mubarak’s son Gamal. For many years, Mr. Ezz has represented the intersection of money, politics and power, controlling two-thirds of the steel market, leading the budget committee as a member of Parliament and serving as an officer and loyal lieutenant in the governing party. Public resentment at the wealth acquired by the politically powerful helped propel the uprising already reshaping the contours of power along the Nile.

Mr. Ezz’s world has come undone. He is treated as a liability by an old guard intent on saving itself from fed-up and furious protesters. He is under investigation on suspicion of corruption. His assets have been frozen and his right to travel taken away. He has denied accusations of corruption in the past, and his location was not known Sunday. Now his name is part of the derisive chants in Tahrir Square, a symbol of all that was wrong with Mr. Mubarak’s government.

Here’s an ominous update from the BBC- don’t know if it’s been confirmed yet:

1453: A judge investigating an explosion near a gas pipeline terminal in Egypt’s northern Sinai peninsula on Saturday says it was caused by bomb planted by four masked men. Egypt’s natural gas company initially blamed the blast on a gas leak. Earlier on Monday, rocket-propelled grenades were fired at a police barracks in the Sinai town of Rafah, injuring a policeman.

Concerns grow over Egypt’s WMD research (Including nukes)
MSNBC ^ | 2/7/2011 | Robert Windrem

Posted on Monday, February 07, 2011 10:22:48 AM by tobyhill

With Egypt in revolt and the country’s future uncertain, concern is growing over whether a new government in the Arab world’s most militarily and industrially advanced country could accelerate an arms race in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

At the heart of the concern is intelligence indicating that Egypt has quietly carried out research and development on weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, biological and missile technology.

The research and development has continued virtually without pause over the past three decades, according to interviews with U.S. officials and a review of intelligence and other government documents by NBC News.

” Glad to see this thread is still being updated. “

Not a whole lotta updatin’ goin’ on, this morning - no ‘news’ to speak of, and, for the most part, what’s out there is rehashes of ‘analysis’ that’s been bounced back and forth for the past week...

Either there’s nothing going on, or there’s lots going on, but it’s under the media’s radar because they’ve lost interest....

State Department to Americans in Egypt: Get out now

Monday, February 7, 2011 - 12:24 PM Share

Despite what appears to be greater calm on the streets in Egypt over the weekend, the State Department sent out a new Travel Warning on Sunday, Feb. 6, that instructs all American citizens to leave Egypt now.

The new, stronger alert replaces a previous Travel Warning from Feb. 1 that called for the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families. The State Department had been chartering planes to help evacuate American citizens from Cairo, but those flights have now stopped. Nevertheless, the new Travel Warning calls for all citizens to leave Egypt, noting the potential for more violence in the offing.

“U.S. citizens should consider leaving Egypt as soon as they can safely do so, due to ongoing political and social unrest,” the Travel Warning stated.

The international airport in Cairo is open and has availability on outgoing flights, the State Department said, adding that travelers can also leave Egypt from airports in Luxor, Alexandria, and Aswan.

“Do not wait for a reply from the embassy or the Department of State before traveling to the nearest airport; further delay is not advised,” the warning stated.

The State Department is also calling on U.S. citizens to avoid all demonstrations and to not go near Tahrir Square, for fear that foreigners could again become targets of violence.

when the Republicans lost the house, but had the Senate and White House in 2006, they just started their vacations right after the elections. Dems stayed and passed all kinds of horrible stuff

I should have been more clear. In 2006 lame duck Republicans went home early. In 2010, lame duck Dems stayed in Washington after the election passing all kinds of horrible stuff while they still had both houses and the Presidency.
