Tribes Threaten to Attack Suez Canal if Mubarak Does Not Step Down
World Threats/Time ^ | 1/29/11

Bedouin tribesman have reportedly taken control of two towns in the Sinai Peninsula. These two towns are the closest to the Gaza Strip and right next to the border with Israel. There were reports yesterday that Bedouin tribes had besieged a police station in Suez and it appears that these riots have spread. This would effectively end the Mubarak dictatorship’s control of the region. There are no reports of the Egyptian military stepping in here.

The more disturbing news is a threat that has been made by the tribes if Mubarak does not step down. According to one report coming from Time Magazine, they are willing to attack the Suez Canal if Mubarak does not leave. The Suez Canal currently is where a third of the world’s oil and six percent of all products passes through. A seizure of the Canal could spike oil prices beyond the current $90 level, perhaps over $110. This could come to pass despite the fact that Egypt is not a major oil producer.

It has been speculated that the Egyptian army would not allow the Canal, perhaps Egypt’s most important economic element, to be attacked. However, there appears to be little to no protection and one report states that at least one ship has been attacked there. Others have reported fear of passing through due to the unrest.

Rising food and energy prices coupled with high unemployment cause riots in the streets of Egypt and threatens the flow of goods thruogh the Suez canal. This causes the the financial markets to run scared, which in turn raises the price of food and energy in Egypt and causes more unemployment.

Escher couldn't have drawn it better.

From the sound of things Mubarak is toast. Probably the quicker he steps down the better as hanging on only creates more instability and chaos which opens the door wider for the hard core Islamists to slip in.

Mubarak may be toast but if you don't think there will be more anti-Western chaos and de-civilization once the Muslim Brotherhood takes over, I got news for you.

Osama Bin Laden's 2nd in command is Muslim Brotherhood's Ayman Al Zawahiri.

Amazing how the MSM has missed THAT little detail.

If Egypt goes, things are going to get REAL hairy in the middle east.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Tribes, no problem. Round up all their camels and goats and shoot them then give them blankets infested with smallpox. Then go stake out a square of useless desert land and put them there and tell them to eke out a living. Oh, no Casinos this time. This has already been tested and found to work. (sarcasm of course)

Osama Bin Laden's 2nd in command is Muslim Brotherhood's Ayman Al Zawahiri.

Convicted in the assassination of Anwar Sadat. Got out of prison in 1984.

"Over three hundred Islamic radicals were indicted in the trial of assassin Khalid Islambouli, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, Omar Abdel-Rahman and Abd al-Hamid Kishk. The trial was covered by the international press and Zawahiri's knowledge of English made him the de facto spokesman for the defendants. Zawahiri was released from prison in 1984."

"Sadat was protected by four layers of security and eight bodyguards, and the army parade should have been safe due to ammunition-seizure rules. As Egyptian Air Force Mirage jets flew overhead, distracting the crowd, Egyptian Army soldiers and troop trucks paraded. One troop truck contained the assassination squad, led by Lieutenant Khalid Islambouli. As the truck passed, the assassins dismounted, and Islambouli approached Sadat. Sadat stood to receive his salute, whereupon, Islambouli threw three grenades at Sadat, only one of which exploded, and additional assassins rose from the truck, firing assault rifles into the stands. After Sadat was hit and fell to the ground, people threw chairs around him to protect him from the hail of bullets. He died from bullet wounds to his aorta though he also had intestinal and neck wounds."

Both quoted sources from Wikipedia.

That is because most in the media studied journalism and minored in ‘studies’ woman, minority, LGBT, etc. They typically lack depth in world and US history.

The media is spinning Egypt like a freedom revolution when in reality it is a Islamic revolution against a corrupt dictator supported by USA/UK ala Iran in 1979.

You will notice that the media does not make any comment about the protestors shouting “ALLAH AKBAR” while attacking the police. Clearly this is a religious reference.

Omar Sharif was an Egyptian Coptic Christian, speaking of hosed ...

I thought he was, too.
According to his Wikipedia page, he's also gotten into a few scuffles in public, which surprised me.

The United Nations should be dismantled if it fails to protect the Suez Canal from sabotage or blockades.

This is an international life-line.

If you want to hear probably the only true voice on the real enemy behind what is happening in Egypt and it's potential disastrous outcome for us and the world - listen to our new Congressman, Lt. Col Allen WEst on Huckabee coming up on Fox at 8 tonight.
West knows who the real enemy is - and he does NOT mince words. PC be damned.
We need to keep this man's back.

We have a strategic interest in keeping the Suez Canal moving. If Suez traffic is brought to to stop, Western economies will be brought to the brink of collapse.

***The Suez Canal currently is where a third of the world’s oil and six percent of all products passes through. ****

Ships were scuttled there in 1956 during the Israeli and British action against Egypt, and again in 1967 when Israel captured Sinai. They were removed when Israel and Egypt signed a peace accord. Suez is really not all that important.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suez_Canal

Under the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936, the United Kingdom insisted on retaining control over the canal. In 1951 Egypt repudiated the treaty, and in 1954 the UK agreed to remove its troops, and withdrawal was completed in July 1956.

On 4 November 1956, a majority of nations at the United Nations voted for Pearson’s peacekeeping resolution, which mandated the UN peacekeepers to stay in the Sinai Peninsula unless both Egypt and Israel agreed to their withdrawal. The United States backed this proposal by putting pressure on the British government by selling Pounds, which would cause it to depreciate. Britain then agreed to withdraw its troops. Pearson was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
