I think he was hoping Pence would run instead of himself.

Americans may generally already be too stupid to select and then vote for a good President..
Critical stupidity Mass may have been reached..

While DeMint might be "rock-ribbed" enough for you, he will draw paltry crowds and garner negligible voter enthusiasm for cerebral, snooze-fest stump speeches.
Denial is no way to spend the next two years.

I like Senator DeMint but,
DeMint on prez run: No
(CNN) Republican South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, a leading force in the Tea Party movement, said Wednesday on CNNs The Situation Room that he's not running for president.
CNN Anchor Wolf Blitzer asked DeMint, Are you going to run for the Republican presidential nomination?
DeMint responded, No, no I'm not.
His comment comes on the same day that he introduced a bill to repeal the health care law signed by President Obama and one day before the inaugural meeting of the Senate Tea Party Caucus, for which he is a founding member.

As a corollary to that: GOP primary voters may be too stupid to select a conservative for their candidate.

It seems every day I’m reading reports that he will run. And reports that he won’t run.
But he is going it Iowa, right? Tells me everything I need to know.
And I thought you were going to say “I like Senator DeMint but, ...”
“He’s a Myth Romney supporter”. I see many comments on other threads about his support of Romney in ‘08. And I ask those FReepers; “would you feel better if he had supported McCain?”

Agreed. Once Pence dropped out, DeMint must have felt obligated.

I'm OK with Pence, but I'd much rather have DeMint.

I am SOOOO behind DeMint!
RUN, JIM, RUUUUNNN!
This is what I have been talking about for months — a true Conservative (or as close as we will find in a human being, so please don’t apply the unachievable FR moving standard) who can win!

This. Pence would not be bad, but DeMint is my number one choice. By far.
