BACHMANN PLAN SLAMMED BY VETERANS' GROUPS (American Legion v. Tea Party?)
Washington Monthly ^ | 1/29/11 | Steve Benen

Posted on 01/29/2011 9:06:02 AM PST by Recovering_Democrat

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) broke unexpected ground this week, presenting a budget plan that included freezing Veterans Affairs health care spending and cutting veterans' disability benefits considerably.

To put it mildly, the Bachmann proposal has not gone over well among groups representing the needs and interests of veterans.

It's not Michelle who has the tin ear.

Exactly!

Well, unlike Social Security and Medicare, veterans benefits are at least constitutional.

Yes and that is an important distinction. We should be clear which federal departments we would eliminate (e.g. Education) and which we would reform (e.g. Veterans Affairs).

What's wrong with Michelle Bachmann proposing to cap spending increases and to stop double-dipping?

Nothing, but that's what needs to get out if she's going to have a chance in 2012.

Some of us respect and appreciate the sacrifices made by our military.

By the way, I commend you on your bang-up job of alienating potential Bachmann supporters. Well done.

What needs to get out will get out when you get it out.

One way to start is to tell those self-conceived conservatives who are foolishly trashing Rep. Bachmann to cut the crap.

What's your plan for Social Security and Medicare, the unconstitutional welfare programs?

Everyone here respects and appreciates the sacrifices made by our military and you know it. You pretend otherwise because you are a grubby despicable liar.

By the way, I commend you on your bang-up job of alienating potential Bachmann supporters.

I don't want people who post things harmful to our Republic to think that I like them (I don't). I want them to understand that at least one conservative thinks that they are posting garbage. Thanks for letting me know that I'm getting my point across.

When I was a young fellow I had an uncle that never worked and poor mouthed everyone he could. I know of what you say. I still loved him and sympathized with him. He died drunk in a graveyard. But he was still human. I despised his laziness but never hated him. I guess like they say blood is thicker than water.

Fraud and waste should definitely be reduced in every department of the government. I was talking about benefits people earned legitimately. I don't think my grandmother's social security should be cut before the government stops supporting non citizens. We shouldn't be spending tens of billions of dollars every year supporting non citizens who entered our country illegally. That money is being wasted every year.

Why not let veterans get vouchers to buy healthcare in the private sector close to where they live rather than have to travel to a VA hospital to be seen by a physician who may not even be licensed in the state where the VA hospital is located? This could save money and improve service.

I forgot to add that Rep. Bachmann's VA proposals will not affect the majority of Veterans anyways. Most Veterans do not use the VA for their medical care, so most Veterans will not notice freezing the VA's budget to current levels.

Also, since there are over 20 million living military Veterans, the vast majority will not be affected by stopping the double dipping of VA Disability and SSDI Disability by approximately 150,000 100 percent Disabled Veterans. Heck, the vast majority of military Veterans do not have ANY service connected disabilities/conditions.

The Veterans who will be mad about this more likely tend to vote DemocRAT anyways, the 'Gimme Brigade' I call them. These Veterans of the 'Gimme Brigade' tend to be the scammers who are not IMO legit 100 percent disabled Veterans (or even legit over say 30 percent Service Connected for that matter) and are fully capable of still being able to work and holding down a job. Their focus in life is to work the system till they get 100 percent Service Connected status.

I know of two Veterans who are now collecting 100 percent VA Disability Pay who are not that bad off (probably would legitimately rate no more than 30 to 40 percent Service Connected disability) and can still work most types of jobs just fine. They just knew how to work the system for full Disability.

Outside of those with Service Connected disabilities that use VA Hospitals, those non-service connected Veterans that use VA Hospitals are mostly poor/homeless welfare types who almost totally vote DemocRAT, so the GOP will not lose votes there either. The VA use Means Testing to prevent non-service connected Veterans who make over a certain amount from using most VA Hospital Service.

You should read the book "Stolen Valor" to read up on how these scam artists make out big courtesy of us tax payers. One of the Veterans Organizations making a stink about this, Vietnam Veterans of American, put out a pamphlet a few years entitled "A Veterans Guide to Tax Free Living" or similar sounding title that showed how to work the system to get a 100 percent Service Connected rating even though you didn't warrant this.

I’m hoping it was an off night. There were two Drs. at the VA emergency room and several major medical emergencies. SIL ended up way down on the list. Funny thing was, he called the VA for an appointment for his stomach pain and they told him to get down to the ER immediately because it might be his pancreous.

My husband goes to the same VA hospital. He’s had a couple of bad experiences, but over all, is satisfied with his care. He really likes his doctor.
