CBS Radio news is now reporting that the staff of the Israeli Embassy have been evacuated. This is eerily similar to 1979.
The entire staff of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo has been evacuated by helicopters.

The Dems would be in hell if an embassy hostage situation happens.Obama couldn’t cope and their political house of cards would fall down.

There is a significant US govt presence in Egypt. The embassy there is, next to Baghdad, the largest in the region, plus the Army and Defense Dept have a number of advisory personnel integrated with the Egyptian Army and I think AF due to the large quantity of US material the Egyptians have purchased at steeply discounted rates for the last 30 plus years. These include< I am pretty sure, Abrams tanks, attack helicopters, towed and sp artillery and F-16 aircraft. Freepers who are more current than I should be able to fill in some details. Should these people or at least all dependents be gotten out? Yes today. Will they? Of course not. It would demonstrate a lack of confidence in someone or the other. There does seem to be a fair chance foreigners in Egypt are going to be threatened by rampaging mobs if this crisis lasts. That would be one positive aspect if Mubarak leaves soon. As the Islamowhacks move to consolidate power we have a window of opportunity to quietly draw down our numbers. Now Nobamba wouldn't think to do that but Gates will probably quietly nod his assent to it being done.

Friday, January 28, 2011BBC: Egyptian Tanks Surround US, UK Embassies

The BBC is reporting that Egyptian Army tanks have allegedly surrounded the embassies of the United States and United Kingdom. This comes after Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff via helicopter. This is coming in through their live blog, and further details appear scarce. The BBC is quoting an al-Jazeera cable:
2125: Tanks have surrounded the US and British embassies in Cairo, Al-Jazeera reports. This could be a huge, huge problem. This is similar to 1979 when the Islamic rebels took the US Embassy and held hostages for 444 days.
UPDATE: The British Foreign Office appears to be reacting:
British Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez.

Most embassy and other personal are protected by US Marines. 350 jarheads against 2000 rag heads, no contest.

I would bet that Islamic militants are pouring into Egypt from all over the middle east right now. That 2000 could be 20,000 in a day or 2.

Tanks surround our embassy. The protesters take control of the tanks and turn them around pointed toward the embassy.
I remember the military in Iran in 1979....soldiers saw protesters coming toward them and threw down their guns and joined the mob.

Still, 350 Marines are a bad, bad, bad force to come up against. And this coming from a former sailor.
