An earthquake has shaken the region" - The above headline from an Israeli newspaper describes with unfailing accuracy the pivotal events now taking place in the Middle East. In Egypt, the Arab worlds largest and most populous country of more than 80 million, massive demonstrations involving tens of thousands of people began on Tuesday in what was billed as a Day of Anger and are continuing despite a ban by a very rattled government. Smaller protests are likewise occurring in Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Algeria. The domino effect so feared by Middle Eastern strongmen after Tunisian protesters chased their president from power earlier this month after a 24-year rule may soon become reality in Egypt....
The disappearance of Arab strongmen like Tunisias ruler, and now possibly Mubarak, opens up the ominous and dangerous potential for a Khomeini-style 1979 Islamist victory befalling Egypt which would be a catastrophic development not only for American and Israeli security interests, but for the Egyptian people themselves. One need only recall Khomeinis killing fields and his Islamic Republics vicious history, continued to this day, to understand the horrifying consequences of Islamists succeeding in exploiting the current strife in Egypt to their benefit.
However corrupt Egypts regime may have been or continues to be, Mubarak succeeded in keeping the Islamists and the religious radicals in check. The Muslim Brotherhood, a major fundamentalist Egyptian opposition group that Mubarak had banned, will definitely try to take advantage of any further economic frustration or breakdown to set up the longed-for Islamic state, probably by promising those who have nothing that they will create a Muslim utopia of social justice, patterned after the Prophet Mohammads rule. That is the bait to hijack the revolution, like the Bolsheviks promised peace, land and bread to the uneducated, downtrodden Russian masses to get their support, only to bring in the Red Terror in return.
As history warns, the Islamists, if successful in seizing power, will internally perpetrate a Khmer Rouge/Khomeini-type bloodbath the likes of which Egypt has never seen before. The first victims will most likely be the countrys religious minorities. Externally, they will involve Egypt in a jihad/war against Israel, Europe or the Shiites and, like Iran, strive to build nuclear weapons.
They (and we) will go right from the frying pan into the fire.
“We” never “HAd’ Egypt...
Yup. The radical-islamists know that they have a friend in the white house so now is the best time to go for the gusto, made easier w/Iranian backing.
Don’t forget Turkey too.
Yes, The Brotherhood knows they have a short window to accomplish as much as possible while there is a Muslim as US president who will sit idly by.
And what exactly do you expect the U.S. government to do?
Yeap. Turkey will collapse. And there is no way Obamy will be able to talk to them. They hate the US. What a mess we'll have on our hands.
Lebanon is now going to be run by Hezbollah. Who knows how Tunisia turns out? Jordan is feeling the heat.
There probably is an unhappy ending here. And the Obama Administration will most likely come off the worst for it. And who knows what will happen with oil prices?
I now think that Mubarak is toast. And if the Muslim Brotherhood gains power, it's "Katie bar the door." We will be talking about another Arab-Israeli war in short order.
I’ll take the “caliphate from which to kill everybody else who does not bend their ass in the air” for $1,000, Alex.
Well, for starters, Hillary could shut up and not enrage the misogynists even more.
Clueless?
Heck, Obama and Hillary could be backing this to put pressure on Israel.
Fools.
You would be surprised. Zero is facing the utter and complete failure of his Administration. He would not be the first President to see WAR as a way out.
However, if as is believed by his overtures to the Islamofascist he is in line with their ideology, we are facing a full scale attack that will threaten our very survival.
Sound alarmist? It is meant to be. Wake up.
No, seriously.
Once again. What should the US do?
“There is no way this is going to end well. And the US government is clueless, on a Jimmy Carter level. “
As with Jimmmy Carter, nothing is getting done in this country on major issues. Persistently high unemployment continues, immigration has not been addressed, tax reform is needed, the staggering debt load is threatening to crush the economy, a steadily declining housing market. With Obama it’s not a question of being clueless, it’s a matter of deiberate neglect combined with massive incompetence.
Egypt is lost already. Military is out with tanks and joining the protesters. The muslim brotherhood is taking over, which means AQ taking over - which is in Obama’s job description. Now there will ba an AQ war machine capable of producing M1 tanks.
Tunisia is long gone, Yemen is following, and Jordan. This will all be over by March.
Then surprise me. What could Obama have done to prevent what's happening in Tunisia and Egypt? What should he be doing now?
Horowitz should show more humility . He and his fellow neocons helped to create this blowback through their support of these dictators (courtesy of our hard-earned tax dollars). Ron Paul was right.
Perhaps, but the military is very secular and won’t hesitate to intervene. The spirit of Atturk lives on in Turkey, especially the military.
