This is merely an attempt to connect some dots.
1) The military is a much beloved and respected institution in Egypt (at least so it seems from my research). We basically fund their military; at least 3/4 of the aid we send to Egypt each year goes to the military. ($1.5B approx)
2) It seems Egypt prides itself on being a more modern state than some of its neighbors, less prone to reactive gestures.
3) Tourism is an emormous money-maker for the country. Where do a great many of those tourists come from?

Mom, I wouldn’t put too much weight on your #1 - history is replete with Militaries that we’ve lavished training and equipment on, who have, if not turned on us, at least been inconsistent ‘friends’...
Pakistan is one example that comes readily to mind....

Just heard tail end of Fox saying some Spy Chief has been appointed as Pres. in Egypt....no details...interesting developement.
Bless you, you’re right Uncle Ike. The Pakistani military however, has been split and splintered for years- where the Egyptian military seems more solid. (Seems- key word)
I was just listening to MSNBC (I know, in crisis, I surf!) and the detestable Richard Engel is reporting some interesting changes.
He’s been in a crowd in Cairo of roughly 100,000- by and large peaceful.
At the same time he’s hearing reports of widespread looting in the wealthier enclaves and suburbs. Resident giving guns and clubs to their security guards to try and maintain order. He says it’s widespread.
There are thousands of westerners trying to get out of Egypt- without success.
Mubarak has never had a vice-president until today; he’s just sworn in his director of intel Omar Suleiman as VP. He’s a supporter of Israel and the US and a longtime associate of Mubarak so the reaction to this appointment will be interesting.
