America's Dying Cities
www.mainstreet.com ^ | January 21, 2011 | Seth Fiegerman

In several dozen cities nationwide, the population actually declined significantly as residents presumably began to flee the region’s toxic financial atmosphere, or perhaps in some cases, even held off on having kids due to a lack of resources.

I think that if current estimates by many economists that $5 gallon gasoline is on the quickly approaching horizon that ALL cities will have an upsurge in population and housing values - it will cost way too much to commute to work and lots of workplaces will gravitate to where mass transit infrastructure already exists.

Pittsburgh ain’t bad lately and has reinvented itself to some extent

Yeah, we hear that all the time. Pittsburgh is the poster-child up here in Buffalo for what a dying city can accomplish -- and it's only fair to say that Buffalo, too, has reinvented itself "to some extent".

The fact remains that fewer and fewer people want to live in either town. Their reinvention has consisted largely in attracting wealthy, inner-city liberals who work for government, in education (same thing) or the law (ditto).

Pittsburgh's, Buffalo's and Cleveland's touted rebirths are nothing but the product of government money and the clustering of people who work in it. They no longer create wealth -- they consume it. And they're getting damned good at it, too.

Wait, this is truly bizarre writing and logic here: "New Orleans suffered a steeper population decline than any other city in the country thanks to Hurricane Katrina, which displaced much of the population and made it difficult – if not impossible – for some to return.

However, the majority of those who were displaced have since begun to return to the city, as have a number of new residents and businesses. So while the city’s population may be down from what it was in 2000, it is clearly ON THE RISE going into the new decade."

It's truly hard to understand how they can put this city at #1 on the dying list, and then add that "However," which contradicts everything they've said. Who writes this stuff?

No, I haven't checked. I'm sure state, county and city web sites will have it posted soon.

That’s what liberals want have you seen this video?

“Obey enviro-tyranny or be banished to the ghetto, threatens new government-funded propaganda piece

The people who produced this video, funded by monolithic elitist banks and corporations like Royal Dutch Shell and Bank of America as well as the British government, know very well that every aspect of their “planned-opolis” is lifted directly from the most abhorrent and brutal dictatorships in history. They are openly flaunting the neo-fascist ideology behind the green movement.”

Gas stopping at $5 per gallon? I think it’s going up to $6 or $7 per gallon and by that point, we’ll suffer from a double dip recession. All thanks to President Obama making it tough to drill in the Gulf.

I suppose the list was made by comparing 2000 census numbers to 2010 census numbers.
