2010 closed as the second highest-grossing year of all time, but it still couldn't shake an air of disappointment. Not only did 2010 end with a whimper, estimated ATTENDANCE was the LOWEST in 15 years.
The box office tally for 2010 was $10.57 billion, or around $30 million shy of 2009. That translated to an estimated attendance of 1.27 billion, which was off eight percent from 2010.
1995 was the last year to have sub-1.3 billion attendance. Since the modern attendance peak in 2002 (1.58 billion), attendance has been trending downward, but 2010 marked the second severe drop-off, following 2005.
Hollywood often failed to offer an appealing slate of movies, and there were fewer movies made available than before. In 2010, 141 movies reached nationwide release (600 locations or more), down from 158 in 2009 and the smallest number since 2001.
The top-grossing movie of 2010 was a holdover from 2009: Avatar, which made $476.9 million of its $760.5 million lifetime total in 2010.
Toy Story 3 was the second-biggest movie in 2010, drawing $415 million. Alice in Wonderland ($334.2 million), Iron Man 2 ($312.4 million) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.5 million) rounded out the Top Five.
Animation business was up 16 percent over 2009 to $1.49 billion, while movies presented in the 3D illusion surged to $3.27 billion (an estimated $2.1 billion of which from 3D alone).
All of the major animated titles of 2010 were shown in 3D, and the industry shoved 3D down people's throats in the wake of Avatar's success, adding enough screens to the point in December when several movies had simultaneous nationwide 3D runs.
All those 3D movies contributed to the gross, but they boiled down to more money from fewer people.

I checked Amazon to see when it’ll be on DVD. It says to sign up to be notified when this item becomes available. It might be at theaters for a while yet.
I thought Gran Torino was a stunning movie. At the end I was speechless and didn't want to move.

I bought Grand Torino at Wal-Mart on sale early last year. A great movie. I’ve tried to get my wife to watch it, but she’s still resisting. She goes for the lovey-dovey fluff stuff.
Well, I’m going to enjoy that adult beverage again today during the Bears game. My Packers won last night (boy, did they...) so I’m going to tune in for sure. Whatever the outcome today, it’ll be fun at my Kiwanis meeting on Thursday, what with the preponderance of Bear fans and we few Packer Backers. Imagine if we meet next week for the NFC championship... WHOOPEEEEEE!
I’m watching on my 37” LCD that’s about 1 year old, and old Pioneer surround system that’s showing its age. Sometime during the year I’ll probably have to replace it.

I really don’t care who wins today, but think it would be great if the Bears found they have to meet us again for the NFC title after winning the division, then that last game on the 2nd. But best of all, it’ll be some Kiwanis breakfast come Thursday, either way...

Yeah, I know that. BTW, if you haven’t seen it, AVOID “Love Actually” and “Old Dogs.” IMHO, two terrible movies. On the other hand, “Good Hair,” a documentary with Chris Rock about African-American hair, is REALLY good.
Thanks. Neither of the first two fit my interests so I wouldn’t be interested in either case. Neither does the third, actually. My genre’s are pretty limited. action, war or Westerns. Especially historical dramas that meet that criteria. Good comedies also fit the bill, but not contemporary ones. I DVR’d “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” a few weeks ago and have watched it twice already. Now, that’s comedy!

Boardwalk Empire...sorta hamfisted with the PC version of the history aspect is nonetheless fun to watch and the soundtrack is superb...it’s a mature audience thing

Yes, my husband loved Tangled and wants to take me back to see it. Our second daughter has seen it three times, and the oldest has seen in twice. That’s not enough to make me go see it though I’m sure I’ll like it. I’ll wait for hubby to purchase it on DVD.

Last year I stumbled onto an interesting historical film about King Arthur on CBN called "Pendragon: Sword of His Father" by Burns Family Films. It seems they share somewhat the same mission as you about making films with a respectful treatment of the Christian influences on history.

Yes, MMMMW is one of the greats, loosely and not quite as effectively re-made as “Rat Race.” But there is a scene in Rat Race that, if you know history, is hysterical. Jon Lovitz has his family in a car, racing for the gold key, and his daughter sees a sign “Barbie Museum.” She wants to stop and of course, he doesn’t. She throws a fit, and they stop. Next scene, you see a bunch of neo-Nazi skinheads: “The real Klaus Barbie, the Klaus Barbie few people knew, was a complex man . . . .” says the tour guide.
