The 1980s song Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio.
In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code. A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's complained last year that the song includes the word faggot in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

A bundle of sticks, a culinary term for herbs or seasoning, a style of embroidery, a kind of meatball, a cigarette, hard work and chores, or an unpaid servant for an older boy?
None of these sound offensive to me.
Them coloured girls sing as good as the little faggot!
And remember, boys will be girls and girls will be boys. It’s a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lo-la...L-O-L-A Lola, Lo-lo-lo-la-lo-la...
What about “les boys”?
Actually I’ve used this as a benchmark for how crazy political correctness has become, as back when it was produced in 1985 and hit #1 and won a Grammy, not a word was said about it.
The slippery slope has taken us to where we are in 25 years, and now the Canadians are making censorship retroactive.
I guess 99.9% of all rap songs must be banned in Canada too.
Political correctness is nothing more than squelching free speech. Eventually it’s going come to a head, most likely violent
The fagolae are just mean-spirited frustrated and ruinous people. Ornery, self-loathing mental cases. That is my definition of tolerance.
They’ve been editing out the word for years, I’ve heard them substitute ‘mother’ for ‘faggot’.
I’m surprised the feminists haven’t complained about the use of “chicks” in the lyrics.
Coming soon to America.
As an aside, I wonder if Canadian radio will ban Rush (the band, not the talk show host) because some of their lyrics were inspired by Ayn Rand ... it wouldn't surprise me for a minute.
Even if they don't they're too stupid to realize the CONTEXT of the song! The song-writer is making a statement, however small and insignificant, of a *dumb*, bigoted, blue-collar sort of hick that uses an utterly "heinous" word like faggot.
I think using the national health care system was what took so long.
Can't go wrong with the target audience. :-}
Good song definitely.
One of my favorite songs of all time. First heard it on Miami Vice.
“Banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee”
Also a racist and discriminatory phrase.
But undetected... as of yet.
I’m no feminist and I don’t care for the term “chick,” but I don’t give a damn if anyone else uses it. Broads like me understand free speech.
