Husbands living in a "harem" with multiple wives have been cleared to claim state benefits for all their different partners. A Muslim man with four spouses - which is permitted under Islamic law - could receive £10,000 a year in income support alone. He could also be entitled to more generous housing and council tax benefit, to reflect the fact his household needs a bigger property.
Ministers have decided that, even though bigamy is a crime in Britain, polygamous marriages can be recognised formally by the state - provided they took place overseas, in countries where they are legal. The outcome will chiefly benefit Muslim men with more than one wife...
Income support for all of the wives may be paid directly into the husband's bank account, if the family so choose. Chris Grayling, the shadow work and pensions secretary, said that the decision was "completely unjustifiable".
He added: "You are not allowed to have multiple marriages in the UK, so to have a situation where the benefits system is treating people in different ways is totally unacceptable and will serve to undermine confidence in the system.
"This sets a precedent that will lead to more demands for the culture of other countries to be reflected in UK law and the benefits system."

This going to get good when they try to say that Mormons can’t have several wives but moose-lim can, because “their religion allows it” ...
There is a valid LEGAL question here- when moose-phlem from overseas marries 4 wives THEN comes to usa (legally)
How do we recognize that?
Oh but remember how during the gay marriage debate, we are told it’s ridiculous to ask won’t this lead to legalizing polygamy?
I know a little about muslim polygamy. It is my understanding only the first wife has inheritance rights, etc. Muslim men often hide their 2nd wife from the 1st, and visa versa. Also it’s not uncommon for a muslim man to be shot when wife #1 finds out.
I don’t think the muslim practices justify govt benefits for wife #2.
Homosexual ¨marriage¨ will not be an issue in Britain much longer.
And the British people calmly accept all this foolishness?
Really?
Joe Teacup has no problem with his tax money being spent this way?
I suspect there is a submerged rage in England that is slowly building. And when it blows, it will be very, very ugly.
The Brits have been so well programmed by now that when it blows the non-mooselimb Brits will be the minority. So it will not blow because sheep don’t attack the wolves.
The Brits who complain are labeled racists and hooligans, and marginalized.
“He could also be entitled to more generous housing and council tax benefit,”
That statement sounds very Soviet.
I reckon polygamy is its own punishment.
Heh heh! You violent conservative, you! Barack Obama might read your post, take it seriously, and act on it.

May government legally and ethically supply guns & ammo to wives #2, #3, #4?
What I meant was ONCE you allow the camel’s nose under the tent by defining marriage as anything OTHER than between ONE man and ONE woman, you open the door to all sorts of Constitutional challenges and logical abberrations like polygamy, bestiality, group marriages, etc.
A society has a RIGHT and a RESPONSIBILITY to define acceptable standards of behavior and morality.
Good grief.
Why are you posting a story from 2008?.
BTW, the extra benefits never happened.
Bump.
The OP posted an obselete story from 2008 (check the link).
The ‘change’ never happened, even Labour in 2008 couldnt swallow that one. Polygamous husbands do not get extra benefits here.
Besides, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands all have different legal systems to England and Wales and a change couldnt have been enforced across the whole of Britain even if it happened.
Which it didnt.
Really? What happened? Do tell.
Glad to hear it didn’t.
Cool!
Good decision on the part of Parliament.
Was he deported or is he sill allowed to live in the country with his multiple wives? Or, did he not get the benefits but all the wives do?
