Chicago mayoral candidate and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday he doesn't expect the lingering controversy over challenges to his residency to impact the race for mayor.
In an interview on Chicago's WGN-TV, Emanuel said voters he talks to are much more interested in "the safety of their streets, the strength of our schools and the stability of our economy so we can grow jobs."
"They're not interested in where Rahm lives," Emanuel said. "They're interested in where they live and the community where they want to raise a kid or get a job."
The Chicago Board of Elections recently ruled that Emanuel was eligible for the city's mayoral ballot after several opponents including the man to whom Emanuel rented his Chicago home while he was serving in Washington, D.C. challenged his residency.
A Cook County Court judge agreed with the board's decision last week, but a lawyer representing those challenging Emanuel's residency has appealed that decision to Illinois Appellate Court.
Emanuel said Wednesday that it should be up to voters to decide whether the residency challenges have any validity.
"Leave it up to the voters to make a decision," he said. "People on the inside shouldn't be trying to make that decision."
The latest poll in the race showed Emanuel out in front with 42 percent of the vote to former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun's (D-Ill.) 26 percent. Former Chicago schools chief Gery Chico was in third with 10 percent of the vote and City Clerk Miguel Del Valle had seven percent.
The mayoral primary is set for Feb. 22. It's a nonpartisan contest where the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff in November.
or where the president was born. or who mentored the president. or who helped write the presidents books. or releasing the presidents grades and college writings. or who financed the presidents educations. or finding the source of foreign online donations to his near $1b campaign warchest.....
voters aren’t interested in a lot of things apparently. but politicians sure are interested in what private citizens do.
I”d bet they would care if the SOB moved in next door.
They say that people tend to get the government they deserve.
Rahm Emanuel Ebonics tranlation meaning: Lying Scumbag
I believe him, many don’t care if their President is a citizen or not.
The law does not depend on what the voters are interested in.
Rules for thee.....but not for me.
Who cares what the voters think; what about the law? Did they decide to waive the residency requirements just for Rahm?
For 'them' - meaning us. Conservative and liberals alike. I kept hearing it from the little twerps all week: "the American people" want guns controlled... want talk radio toned down, etc etc.
Every friggin' liberal thinks he's God - knows all and is above it all.
Yep I would esp. if he tried to come visit while I was in the shower...
They don’t care about oabama’s long form BC either... huh rahm?
LLS
Not surprised that a liberal like The Ballerina who treats the Constitution as it were not worth the parchment it is written on would also not respect the municipal rule of law regarding residency requirements.
Hey, that tactic worked for his old boss and his Constitutional eligibility for the job.
professional politicians are commies
