AS LONG as we call mass killings senseless, we will never make sense out of them. Senseless has become a code word for denial about guns.
It kept coming up in response to this weekends rampage in Arizona, in which a disturbed 22-year-old college dropout armed with a semi-automatic allegedly killed six people and wounded 14 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Everyone from President Obama to Republican House Speaker John Boehner called the shooting senseless.
That, too, is what President Clinton called the 1999 Columbine school massacre that claimed 15 lives. But senseless, it seems, was an excuse for not tightening up our gun laws. In fact, the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
When the Virginia Tech massacre claimed 33 lives in 2007, President Bush said, Its impossible to make sense of such violence and suffering. True to Bushs word, Congress did not even try. President Obama caved in early on guns, signing into law a rule allowing loaded weapons into national parks.
This weekend, in a heartfelt question from the International Space Station, astronaut Scott Kelly, Giffordss brother-in-law, asked: What is going on in our country that such a good person can be the subject of such senseless violence?
What is going on is a quiet disaster. Neither Columbine nor Virginia Tech changed anything, and it is possible that not even an assassination attempt on a member of Congress is going to spur America into a fresh debate about guns and their availability to almost any angry, disturbed, immature, or coldly calculating citizen who wants to get their hands on them. We are in a quiet internal war that takes far more lives than what we are losing in Iraq and Afghanistan, and no one is calling for disarmament talks...

In Tallahassee today. Another example of the good guy winning.
whats senseless is that in the 1960’s & 70’s the state and federal governments ruled that the mentally ill had the legal right to refuse treatment and could be involuntarily committed to mental institutions unless they posed a clear and present danger to themselves or others.
Very sorry for your loss.
I agree. Come get ‘em. This attack on our gun rights is back-firing on the libs, as per the current headline at Drudge:
“Glock Pistol Sales Surge in Aftermath of Arizona Shootings”
Gangs run rampant in our cities. Murder & assault are a common occurrence in most places. People are afraid to go out at night. Doors are always locked & bolted. Teachers are afraid of their students.
This crap has got to stop.
The law should read: Anyone possessing a weapon or threatening violence in the commission of a crime gets life at hard labor, mando. Anyone using a weapon or violence in the commission of a crime gets the death sentence, mando. This law will be taught to all school children every year.
A couple of generations of this law would seriously reduce violence in this country.
The left sells more weapons than anyone.

What is senseless is that the tyrants ignore the fact that gun laws don’t disarm criminals; they disarm their victims.
.
Leon Pitts got it right yesterday when he denounced the new politically correct version of Huckleberry Finn with the “n word” removed.
It is not worth wasting the time on Derrick.
At least he has “progressed” from his hate and blame whitey theme to whining about freedom. He’s a radical like his Kenyan brother.
90 million law abiding gun owner’s didn’t kill anybody last weekend.
I am so sorry for your loss.
My sister was killed by an evil thing that pushed her in front of a moving bus..... on purpose.
Evil exists and it does NOT need a specific item to spread misery and pain.
These anti-gun tools are truly fixated and disturbed. The Tucson murderer could have taken a speeding car and rammed the crowd killing many. Should we ban cars?
Couldn’t have said it better. There will always be evil people among us to spread the misery and pain.
What compounds it is the INJUSTICE system we now have that no longer punishes, but coddles them.
I’m sure you miss your sister every day just as I miss my Jeremy. The hurt never goes away.
Maybe we should only license “qualified” persons then we would be safe from those dangerous SUV’s. No one would every have/drive a SUV that wasn’t licensed.
We have laws that work like immigration and DWI and they have proven to work so well. /sarc

Your point was brought up on “Hannity” last night.
I have been around and owned guns my whole life. So did my father, and his father ...
None of us have killed anyone, robbed anyone, threatened anyone. Ever. In 3 generations.
How is disarming me going to make anyone safer?
Allegedly? Oh yeah, the gun did it.
As long as Derrick Z. Jackson (who I presume is male) carries a penis, then he is in denial about rape.
