Have been doing research on the Mob and beating. (keep googling) It is a common practice. Sometimes done to those who owe money, or have a gambling dept. Sometimes to teach a lesson that they are in charge/or to someone who has crossed someone in the family. Often beaten to an “inch of their life”. Sometimes beaten to death to send a message to others.

Interesting, but so far have not quite found a tie in.

My hometown was a prime mob toen at one time. Most of them are dead now but I did see one the other day at the Post Office.

The usual was execution and the body was easily found. It's called a lesson.
