Taking On The Regulatory Tsunami
IBD Editorials ^ | January 4, 2011 | Staff

Regulation: Beltway pundits say Republicans are making a mistake in vowing to block ObamaCare "piece by piece." They're right. They should get rid of it entirely. It's already hurting consumers and businesses.

Of course, the media want GOP lawmakers to back off. They argue they should focus on "jobs" and not get distracted "looking backwards." But ObamaCare has already become a major pocketbook issue for middle America — and a major headache for business. If possible, it ought to be repealed outright, not just tinkered with through the appropriations process.

The so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act won't be fully implemented until 2014. But two key provisions — no annual or lifetime limits on health benefits and mandated coverage of children under 26 — are already taking effect. And they're already raising the cost of providing insurance.

Several insurers have attributed a portion of their 2010 rate hikes to the provisions, according to a Heritage Foundation study. Regence Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Oregon has attributed 3.4 percentage points of its 17.1% rate increase to ObamaCare, while Celtic Insurance Co. in Wisconsin and North Carolina blames half its 18% rate hike on the new law.

ObamaCare also mandates that insurers cover a minimum package of benefits. The Congressional Budget Office estimates these new mandates will jack up premiums as much as 30% for individual policyholders and 3% for small groups.

When people use more services, insurers have to raise premiums to cover higher costs. Take the premium shock that occurred in North Carolina after Blue Cross-Blue Shield began fully covering obesity surgery. The new benefit led to a 55% increase in members opting for the surgery from 2007 to 2009. The higher usage, in turn, contributed to an overall 24% jump in costs over that period.

I find it interesting that the liberals suddenly want to concentrate on job creations. Where were they before? Had they concentrated on jobs instead their horrendous health care disaster the unemployment rate wouldn't be so high

What will excite Conservatives the most is to see the GOP House totally defund ObamaCare.

It will be fun to watch the ObamaCare Bureaucrats clear their office because there are no funds to pay their salaries.

Forget about repeal, defunding will be fun to watch.

These are not mutually exclusive solutions.

The Republicans need to totally obliterate Obamacare. In fact, they have already introduced a two-page bill in congress to do so. They need to argue their case loudly. They need to pressure the Democrats to either get on board, or face the voters in the next election.

But they also need to defund it, piece by piece, because Obama will certainly veto any bills that are passed.

They need to do everything humanly possible to undermine, postpone, defund, and destroy this bill, and they shouldn’t wait to start doing it along every possible track.

It is TIME to DownSize DC!!!!

Close Entire Departments! (EPA, FDA, Dept. of Education, Department of Energy) CLOSE THEM.

Ask this question: What would be the very worst thing that would happen if they did not exist.

Answer, things would get better quickly on our own.

It is TIME to force Congress & Senate to telecommute most of the year from their home districts, under the thumb of the electorate and away from the lobbyists. The Constitution states they shall meet at least 1 time per year and specifies the date. (has been changed) It would change the center-of-gravity of the Federal Government away from DC and toward the States.

The Texas Legislature meets 1 time every 2 years, unless the Governor calls a special session. It has worked well for a very long time, there is no reason it would not for the Federal Government.

Yes, and thirdly(is that a word?), pass REAL reform that willhelp drive costs down.

Tort reform, mandates for various types of coverage(Consumers can decide what they want), remove limits on Health savings accounts and across states purchasing, and for pete' sake, GET THE GOVERNMENT THE HELL OUT OF THE BUSINESS OF MEDICINE!

Abolish the EPA, FCC , for starters.

And deport illegals.

Those 3 things would help America and freedom greatly.

Gut it. All.

We are in a Niagara River of financial currents. Scuttle the programs. Scuttle them all.

I really, really, really agree with your assessment. What’s missing, though, is what trees and lamposts to hang these fascist and commie democrats.

I don’t even care to hang them. Just make them get a real job. However, that might be a death sentence for their like.

Glad you agree about how totally worthless MOST of DC is. Worse than Zero, but a Negative contribution value.

Once the illegals are deported there will be plenty of jobs for their overpaid relatives in useless government jobs.

Hang out with a few gov employees and their biggest complaint is how to kill time. It’s why they want a shorter work day and week. Tapeworms.

As newly elected Congreeman, Allen West (R-FLA), brilliantly said: " The

I'll do one better, since telecomms would give em more 'oooopsies' to loose classified info...

instead, make em commute via horseback...

Dem’s don’t care what the “citizens” want and it is time to nail their hides to the wall for it.

They suffer from “terminal arrogance”. Only one cure for it, removal from office.....

Every time Pelosi and Reid wanted to pass a Obama-care version they held congress hostage so they couldn't talk to their voters who would tell them to vote NO. So the only outlet voters had was on election day at the polls and they got that big surprise.

MSNBC liberals hate Allen West, a conservative black is their worst threat as with Clarance Thomas.

Government “Bloatess” on every level is destroying our nation. I worked as a vendor to state, fed and city government. I supplied many goodies and lived next door to the AK Governor in the early 80’s. The single biggest complaint from all of my friends in government was how to kill time. It drove them nuts having a job that required 2 hours of light work. Openly admitting that one “Real Worker” could do the job of 4 to 5.

As a man who has created jobs it is very frustrating to see so much money wasted. It’s like watching a Mcdonalds with the closed sign up, throwing every burger in the dumpsters while money is magically appearing in every register.
