Society Of Professional Journalists Claim 'Illegal Immigrant' Is An 'Offensive' Term Wednesday, December 29, 2010 By Eric Scheiner
The Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) have announced an educational campaign against the term illegal immigrant seeking to inform reporters that the term illegal immigrant is offensive to Latinos.
In the latest issue of SPJs magazine Quill, SPJs Diversity Committee member Leo Laurence writes about the campaign referencing the National Association of Hispanic Journalists recommendation to use undocumented immigrant or undocumented worker and to Avoid using illegal(s) as a noun.
In the article Laurence also makes a constitutional argument against the term 'illegal immigrant', One of the most basic of our constitutional rights is that everyone (including non-citizens) is innocent of any crime until proven guilty in a court of law. Thats guaranteed under the Fifth, Sixth and 14th Amendments of the Constitution.
Simply put, only a judge, not a journalist, can say that someone is an illegal, Laurence adds.

Next, shoplifters will be exercising undefined deferred payment plans...
When did it become inappropriate to "offend" law breakers by labeling them?
These people are not journalists. Real journalists attempt to enlighten readers/listeners/viewers not to mislead them and lie to their faces.
I have not seen a real journalism in a long time.
“False and misleading”...
Right up the alley for anyone from the left.
Next.
Inappropriate for all the illegal Russians, Chinese, Peruvians, Irish, etc.
“Invaders” covers them without being over specific.
Frankly, I find anyone claiming that “illegal immigrant” is offensive to Latinos is being offensive to Latinos because they are outright stating that they actually believe what they are accusing others of believing.
How about calling them what they are ... “Undocumented Dem-O-Rats” ? Does removing the word ‘immigrant’ from the term help any? They came here ILLEGALLY, and so they are not actually immigrants, they are “illegal foreign invaders” who should be prosecuted and deported EVERY TIME when found period! BUILD THE DAMN WALL from Cali to Texas 112th Congress Critters ! I don’t care if you have to shut down the EPA to pay for it.
Where, in 'illegal immigrant' is there an allusion, implication or reference to someone's ethnic group? Why would Latinos pop their heads over the parapet and be offended. Why not Moldavians? Why not Australians? Why not Tamils? The saying used to be "If the cap fits, wear it." This is another case of so called journalists manufacturing news.
I sort of agree. Illegals don’t deserve the “immigrant” designation, as they are not legitmate immigrants. Real immigrants (the legal kind) should not be forced to suffer the indignity of being associated with these criminal invaders.
I propose we stop using the term “illegal immigrant” and replace it with “illegal alien criminal invader”.
As the guy on Foxnews said, “That’s like calling rapists ‘non-consensual sexual partners.’”
Yes, and drug dealers will be called undocumented, independent pharmacists.
LOL....they’ve been listening to Mark Steyn.
Avoid using illegal(s) as a noun.
I’ll go along with that. But in the phrase illegal immigrant the word illegal is an adjective, not a noun.
I live in SoCal.
illegal mexicans is the vast majority here.
Invaders is good, too.
;)
For 200+ years - the law correctly defines Illegal acts against the law - and that has never been offensive... except to the criminal - who has LOST his/her 'rights' by an Illegal criminal act.
Illegal Immigrant - is a accurate description that is supported by 200+ years of correct and accurate usage in English for 'illegal criminal acts or illegal tort'; and accurate usage of 'immigrants' in reference to people coming to America to start a new life.
Only English rejecting, Law rejecting, Rights rejecting, American rejecting: FOOLS and IDIOTS would consider these words 'offensive'.
I find that the 'society of professional journalists' are offensive to our American freedoms, rights, Laws, and English-American usage to accurately communicate.
We now live in this age where 'bad' means 'good'; 'illegal' means 'legal'; 'democrat' means 'correct' and 'republican' means 'terrorist' or 'hitler'. The USA is fast being destroyed by FOOLS and IDIOTS such as these and the zer0 [Obama types].
Society Of Professional Journalists = Ministry of Truth.
It’s offensive to me, too, since they’re not “immigrants” and calling them that is an insult to real immigrants.
I prefer “criminal invaders.”
So they want to go back to ‘wet backs’, ‘wops’, greenhorns?
