North Korea has deployed multiple rocket launchers along the shore north of Yeonpyeong, Baeknyeong and Gangwha islands in response to a planned South Korean artillery drill on Yeonpyeong, government sources here say. The North earlier threatened an "unpredicted self-defense counterattack" to the drills.

A South Korean government source said, "After making the threat in a message sent Friday, North Korea raised the alert level at artillery divisions on the west coast and deployed the multiple rocket launchers."

The North also reportedly made coastal artillery ready to fire and put some fighter jets on the west coast on standby.

South Korean response to Richardson’s “breakthrough”:

Quote:
“Chances are high that it is bad news rather than good news, although we need to closely review the context of the (reported) agreement,” the Cheong Wa Dae official told Yonhap News Agency on the condition of anonymity. “It appears to be a trick aimed at justifying its illegal uranium enrichment program.”

North Korea’s nuclear program, especially the uranium-based one, is subject to dismantlement, not simple inspection, he added.

South Korean troops have recently attached yellow ribbons on their helmets for troops along the DMZ. Some of them say "Reunification" and others say "Obliterate Communism".

Here are some troops from yesterday or so with wearing them:

"Reports that SK fighter jets are on combat air patrol over the islands."

Does anyone doubt that NK, SK, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and US fighter jets are actively patrolling the region today?

Hell, in times like these we could have war by accident.

I am sure that he, along with Jimmy Carter, sought them out through the DPRK mission in New York City and not vice versa, and Richardson won out (or they draw straws) as to which one would fly up to Pyongyang to deliver the typical, crisis-laden, last minute panicked, weakneed, easily-fooled, same mistake over and over, US appeasement bl*wjobs to the Norks.

The South should just remark to Richardson the sooner he gets out of Pyongyang the better.

I might add that today, the South forbid any South Korean workers from going up to the North Korean industrial complex in Kaesong, just north of the DMZ near Panmunjom, for fear of them becoming human shields or hostages.

That’s what worries me - all that hardware in the area makes it so if one small error is made the whole place could go up.

I can see headlines in a week reading “WW3 accidentally started by Seoul Air Traffic Control”.

And it’s not just planes, there’s a ton of everything deployed and on alert.

...they could well take Richardson, Blitzer and the others hostage in Pyongyang, and state that it is for their own "safety".

Someone mentioned "acceptable losses" upthread. AFAIC Richardson would be the only acceptable loss. In fact a thank you letter might be in order.

SEOUL, Dec. 20 (Yonhap) — North Korea said New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson met Monday with a ranking official of the communist country to deliver “a present” for leader Kim Jong-il.

A two-paragraph dispatch by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) suggested Richardson has failed to meet with the 68-year-old leader amid festering regional tensions.
