Reporters told: Don't say 'illegal immigrant' - everyone innocent until proven guilty

A diversity plan from a group of journalists says reporters should not be using the term "illegal aliens" because it is not constitutional.

"Frequent use of the phrases 'illegal immigrant' and 'illegal alien' by our mainstream media is being questioned in order to remain faithful to the principles of our U.S. Constitution," Leo Laurence wrote in the "Diversity Toolbox" column on the website for the Quill, which is produced by the Society of Professional Journalists.

He said the organization's "Diversity Committee" met during its 2010 convention in Las Vegas and "decided to engage in a yearlong educational campaign designed to inform and sensitize journalists as to the best language to use when writing and reporting on undocumented immigrants."

The concept, however, elicited some pointed criticism from analyst Alana Goodman of the Culture and Media Institute, who noted that the campaign appears to be targeted toward one situation, when there are many others that also could be addressed.

"The label 'remains offensive to Latinos, and especially Mexicans, and to the fundamentals of American jurisprudence,' wrote Leo E. Laurence," said Goodman.

"Seeing as most Latinos in the U.S. are not illegal immigrants – and since the term has no racial or ethnic connotation – it's hard to see how it would cause offense to this group. In fact, the only people who should really be put off by the term are illegal immigrants themselves (or their advocates), who don't believe unlawful residency in the U.S. should be a crime," Goodman wrote.

OK. Am I allowed to say illegal immigrant once I have certainty that the person is not legally in the country though?

There’s no such thing as an illegal “immigrant.” They must be referring to illegal aliens.

This is a mythical website as there is no such thing as a Professional Journalist.

Don’t worry ... they’re still going to call them “illegal guns” though.

Like they ever use the term in the first place, they’ll talk about “immigrants” (no qualifiers) or “the undocumented” as is.

Desperate, vote-crazy Dems ignore the Nov 2 debacle at their peril. Remember when Ohaha exhorted illegals to "vote against the enemy" on Nov 2? So how'd that work out for Dems (/snix)?

Obama is all puckered up, on his knees, fellating the Mexican government, the National Council of La Raza, and other immigrant advocates....all of whom are swearing on a stack of frijoles that illegals wil vote for endangered Dems.

The Obama admin continues to tolerate this ntl-security nightmare of illegals using multiple identities.

This outrage is burdening taxpayers and polluting our election system----b/c these criminals adopt multiple fraudulent identities. Keep in mind, all the evidence shows illegals establish several identities with phony SS nos and fake documents (which these "poor immigrants" buy from document brokers for several thousand dollars). Illegal parents get anchor babies SS nos. The SS nos are used to establish fake identities. Voye-crazy endangered Dems are pushing to get all those fake identities to vote.

======================================

It's becoming clearer and clearer, these racist Third World hyphenates are building a nation within our nation. THEIR nation does not recognize US sovereignity, our laws, customs, our Constitution, and our form of government.

One of the racist hyphenates said they are planning to throw out "all those old white men in the US Congress." Americans consider that a declaration of war.

Fine. Everyone should be ready and willing to document their citizenship status.

Obama, you first.

Political correctness is an evil tool. It has been used throughout history to suppress the truth and honest dialogue.

Political correctness is an evil tool.

I think political correctness should only apply to politicians. If one isn’t a politician, he needn’t be politically correct. He only needs to be civil to those who are civil to him.

I guess that’s a very un-politically correct thought.

This “Leo Laurance” seems to be the editor of something called “Vector”, self-described as the country’s “leading homophile publication.” Glad to know that . . .

This nonsense is status quo for liberals. Defeat truth by limiting the debate and controlling the conversation. Illegal alien is a label that alerts the hearer or reader that the person referred to has entered the US illegally. Most often, a court decision isn’t required to ascertain that information, no more than a court decision is required to label someone as an undocumented immigrant. This is on a par with comparing those who tell the truth about Islam with the Nazis who persecuted the Jews. Extend that to those who tell the truth about the consequences of illegal immigration. Convolve truth until it is twisted into a lie.

” “Some believe the phrase ‘illegal alien’ originated with fiery, anti-immigrant groups along the U.S.-Mexico border, such as the Minutemen.””

Ignorant statement.
My dad was an immigration officer on the canadian border. He called them illegal aliens back in 1965 when he processed paperwork to send border jumpers back to canada.

God forbid these zealots let facts get in the way of their advocacy.

I will continue to call them illegal aliens, just as I will continue to ask reporters if they want a size 12-wide sphincter.
