Reagan birth centennial stamp debuts
The Washington Times ^ | December 13, 2010 | Mark A. Kellner

Posted on 12/13/2010 12:06:08 PM PST by jazusamo

If it was "morning in America" for President Ronald Reagan, a new commemorative postage stamp due in February to mark "the Gipper's" birth centennial will forever view the sunrise.

The new commemorative stamp, whose design was unveiled Monday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., always will be valid for a 1-ounce first-class letter, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed. It officially will be released at the library on Feb. 10, 2011, four days after the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth.

Texas artist Bart Forbes did the portrait, based on a 1985 photograph of Reagan taken at Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, Calif.

The design was published first in Linn's Stamp News, a hobbyist publication. Earlier this year, Linn's broke the news that a Reagan Centennial postage stamp would be released.

Although the preliminary design shows a 44-cent value, the postal agency recently announced that all commemorative, or special, issues will be inscribed with "Forever," instead of a face value, meaning they would sell for the then-current first-class rate but would remain valid for first-class mail even when rates increase.

A USPS spokesman who asked not to be identified by name said a revised version showing the "Forever" inscription will be released Dec. 28.

Not much of one. I usually watch the Superbowl if I can, though my winter conference often covers that Sunday so I miss it then. This year’s looks interesting, though.

I used to like the commercials. They have not been that good the past few years. I have no preference on who wins this year. I hope it is a good game. They all say it is going to be one. So I look for a blow out.

I didn’t get a haircut, either. Still 33 and pouring rain. We made our table decoration for the Cub Scouts banquet tomorrow, and Tom is doing a cake-decoration project. Unfortunately, he used up all the powdered sugar!

I hate to think what my hair will look like by this time next month. Gonna be ugly to deal with, for sure.

I made some cookies a few days ago, but I’ve been having so many low blood sugar episodes that I decided to get a glucometer. That was the easy part. Now I have to see if my doctor will give me a prescription so I can get the test strips. *sheesh*

So I’ve been sticking with mostly protein and not too much in the way of carbs. I gave the cookies away.

:o|

I hope not! Went out with the R&D group for lunch today, and suddenly in the middle of lunch my stomach suddenly tightened again. Don't know why.

LOL, yah! Maybe it was because I'd just booked my trip to Nashville for the last week in March and was waiting for the official approval.

Getting on my preferred airline had been proving to be quite difficult this week, and I was slowly resigning myself to travel on one where I have no status at all, not even for preferred coach seats.

My one guarantee of preferred carrier required an airport 4 hours' drive away. Too much.

This morning it all fell into place. The 40 trips ahead of my carriers' trips (in terms of price) had schedules from lousy to totally unacceptable: the best had 6AM departures, but some had connection times under an hour and many departures home began before my meetings ended.

Not cheap though. I'd estimated $550 for airfare, so $574 was not too far off. But when I actually booked it, the price dropped $100! The fancy conference hotel showed up on BedbugRegistry.com, so I booked a nearby Hilton Garden Inn, rate negotiated by Corporate and $40/night less than the conference special rate. That more than offsets the car I had not originally planned to book.

So all in all, I'm saving the company $150 - $200 on this trip while staying in a nice, clean and comfortable hotel, with a car, AND I'm able to get home the evening after meeting's end.

It was approved.

Now I'm waiting for details on the meetings in Atlanta the week before that so I can request then book that one.

Well, I’m betting you’ll be just fine. Saving money and avoiding bedbugs are good things. Especially if you can do both in one swell foop.

I’m outta here. Didn’t sleep much last night, so I’m going to curl up with a good book.

My hair is impossible already, too. Maybe I’ll get to the hairdresser next week sometime. It’s just so far down the list, if I can get an hour away from the Offspring!

One of my Cub Scout moms is a hairstylist. Maybe she can come over and give me a cut and color, “off the books.” I’ll ask her tomorrow. She’s rather punk, but she does a great job with her color.

If you sleep in your car, you save money and avoid bedbugs. The airport parking garage is pretty safe.

Good night.

Looks like it could be bad news for Seumas Ruaraidh. They're testing him to see whether it's worth trying to put a new oil pump in, or if it's a new engine.

Being down to one car is a problem, we're so far out. (Better that your situation but not by much.)

Two months until Consumer Reports publishes their used car report for 2011, but at least I found a summary from 2010. Running two old cars the way we do (12 and 19 years), with seemingly almost 10% downtime for one or the other, I think we need a third car. Unlike when we bought Ealabhan, I'm not really taken by the low-price cars. But one's a pickup (Ford F-150) and I've missed having a pickup ever since we let go of Truck ('74 Datsun) in 2000. I wonder if I could find one with a stickshift?

Yah, but have you seen the showers in airport parking garages???

(Neither have I.)

No, I haven’t, either. But how good is being clean if you have bedbugs?

My hair is impossible already, too.

One thing I learned on this trip: though I like Hilton Garden Inns, their conditioner is really bad for my hair. (Such of it as I still have.) It's more "controllable" without the conditioner.

I goofed when I packed last week and had only tiny tubes of Pantene shampoo/conditioner with me. I bought some new shampoo & conditioner at the hotel (expen$ive!), enough for several trips -- and then forgot them when I packed to leave St. George. Grrr.

Prefer not to use the hotel stuff when I can. Many years ago some hotel's shampoo left a brassy highlight in my hair and left it unmanageable. (I suspect somebody refilling the bottles was playing games.)

Tomorrow I will refill my usual travel bottles from the shower bottles at home. And the mini pomade jar (for the curled moustache, much better than moustache wax) and I'm ready for a few more trips. Though I suppose I need to replace the baggies, both "liquids" and "non-liquids", that have replaced my ditty bag.

I just remember what somebody told me a few days ago: "There is life after travel."
