Bush v. Gore, 10 years later
WaPo ^ | 12.12.10 | George Will

The passions that swirled around Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court case that ended 10 years ago Sunday, dissipated quickly. And remarkably little damage was done by the institutional collisions that resulted when control of the nation's supreme political office turned on 537 votes out of 5,963,110 cast in Florida.

Many controversies concerned whether particular votes could be said to have been cast properly. Chads are those bits of paper that, when a ballot is properly cast by puncturing spots next to candidates' names, are separated from the ballot. In Florida, there were "dimpled" chads that were merely dented and "hanging" chads not separated from the ballots. Furthermore, there were undervotes (ballots with no vote for president) and overvotes (votes for two presidential candidates) and ill-designed (by a Democrat) butterfly ballots.

Not saying they’re going to steal it, just saying they’re probably gonna raise a heck of a ruckus if they lose.

When I think of what the NAACP did against Dubya I think nothing can be lower.

They don’t mind dwelling in the sewer but we don’t have to join them. We just have to make sure they don’t win.

That debacle led to me finding and signing up for FreeRepublic. I’m glad it happened.

Ditto here. I always say to people who ask me about my "political baptism" that two events got me locked in: 1) the recount and 2)9/11.

The third was the war in 2003. I used to listen to a sports radio show from 9a-12n PST, and when it became all antiwar all the time, I began looking for an alternative. I found it not far up the dial, from 570 (Jim Rome) to 640 (Rush Limbaugh). I, as a black man, had heard a lot about Rush, but only what the driveby media told me. I started listening then, and I've been hooked ever since.

Been here ever since. Freeped till 2am the night after the 2004 election. Freeped from India on Wednesday morning of the 2006 midterm (which was Tuesday night here in the states). Turned the computer off completely at 8pm pst when it was clear that Zero won. Twas the best of times, twas the worst of times, twas some buggered times...been at FR for lots of it!

Would Gore have won the election if he won his home state?

Yes. It was that close.

Obviously I am thrilled that Bush eventually won. I was in Tallahassee during that day.....Wow. That was fun. Anyway, had Gore won, we would not have Obama. I don’t think Gore could do near the damage that Obama has done. I could be wrong especially with his Global Warming nonsense, but had he won, there would not have been a Global Warming at least from him. Things happen for a reason.....not sure what the reason for Obama is though.

There were 2 books written that I read: At Any Cost by Bill Sammon, and another by some limp-wristed Dem blaming every ill in the world on Bush... I just don’t recall the title. Anyhow, At Any Cost is a fantastic book, and goes into detail how Gore viewed the election, the laws, the military, etc.

Total nonsense. I still remember the left even days after 911 (like Chris Matthews, Brian Williams, etc.) still involved in petty liberal hate Bush politics. They eventually stopped for 6 months after it was clear the country was in no mood for their bs.

What we also learned during this fiasco was that when Dems bussed people in to protest (many of whom were grabbed off welfare lines) they were “concerned citizens demanding justice.” However, when Pubs came in on their own dimes, the press referred to them sneeringly as “Republican Operatives.” Never has the bias of the media been on such blatant display.

True. My family and I drove down to Tallahassee on our own dime with home made signs. The dems were bussed in and had mass produced signs. The media only covered them.

It’s taken 10 years, but people are finally realizing what a nutcase algore is, and how the country dodged a bullet that time!
The “massage” woman in Seattle, the mea culpa on gasohol - all we need now is for him to admit he was wrong on the so-called “globa warming.”
