This is horrible.
“said to have sprouted from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea 2,000 years ago. “
The Brits have some weird legends
My guess, of course.
Good thing we christians don't place much stock in icons.
Could a tree surgeon do some emergency surgery to fix the tree?
It is a tree and hardly the heart of Christianity.
You can only pity those so reprehensibly deprived of anything resembling human consciousness. Were the world depleted of their kind........
That is just sick. And so very sad. A tree that has outlived so many generations is like a revered elder. To indiscriminately damage it like that just underscores some of the meanness and idiocy of our times. I hope they can fix the damage and get it to sprout new limbs. I don’t know anything of this tree or this kind of tree. I’m reminded of the Ents in LOTR, some of my favorite characters. So very sad.
If this had been done to something that muslims held in esteem you can bet there would be untold investigations and arrests.
They must hurry and grow cuttings from the living branches, to make more trees, and to plan an entire grove of them.

The comments at the original article are interesting. One poster explicitly blames a local real estate developer for the destruction. If so, this is a highly charged conflict of a different kind.
I didn’t know there were any Christians left in the U.K.
I saw the tree when I was there. At least, they should be able to make grafts of it. How sad.
I went to the tree this morning, i am so shocked! It is a special Holy tree not just for christinaity but for pagans and all faiths. We now know who did it and he revenged the whole town because he wanted to build flats and we opposed the destruction of the hill where the tree grows. So after the sprig was sent to the queen he ruined the tree over night. - Ella, Glastonbury, 09/12/2010 17:19
From the commetns section it looks like it wasn’t who you all think it was but a developer who was p’oed that he couldn’t plow the hill to build flats. It also looks like the trunk is still in the ground so with good care which I’m sure the town will get it the tree could survive and bloom again.Watch for new sprig to spout soon to give the world hope.
A vanquished people must become used to their sacred things being handled, fingered, licked and treated with contempt by the conqueror.
Well, I see that we still have a few of the descendants of Oliver Cromwell here in the forum. I wish they’d save more of their energy for fighting against the liberal atheists and Communists and Muslims who are the real threat to Christianity and our western civilization.
I’m very sorry to hear about this. Glastonbury has always been famous as a Grail site. And for its connections with the ancient Arthurian stories.
At least they are salvaging the cuttings, as they have done before. And it’s good to know that so many of the villagers still feel strongly about preserving their traditions.
