What has happened is welfare has made the American poor feel they are to o good to work for minimum wage. Welfare doesn't in the end stop, so many people won't fill the bottom level jobs.
Here come illegals who work hard at times and because they have no welfare they HAVE TO WORK TO EAT.
As it is they seem to have access for their kids to 15k a year per child, free health care, food stamps and so forth.

There is no benefit to adding another huge level of poor legally to our welfare roles.

In addition, low-skill immigration siphons off government anti-poverty funding and makes government efforts to shrink poverty less effective. Milton Friedman said, “You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state.” We have both.
