I would be less inclined to take prisoners in this scenario. Some of these prisoners were taken at great risk to our troops, when they could easily have been dispatched. Maybe the logical course of action in this situation will result in a change of the ROE.

I remember when the US used to distribute these Chieu Hoi passes so the VC and NVA could surrender to us. Several times we were into some pretty heavy combat and when these bastards ran out of ammo they would throw down their weapons and wave these passes and shout “Chie Hoi” it didn't do them any good, we shot em anyway.

The time to claim Cheu Hoi status was before the shooting started not kill our friends until you ran out of ammo then surrender. After ten years of Iraq and Afghanistan Americans still cannot get through their heads that in war you kill the enemy and destroy their means of making war.
