More than one-out-of-four Americans (27%) think the government should manage the U.S. economy, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Nearly as many (24%) say it's better for the government to stay out of economic decisions altogether.
A plurality (43%) of Adults, however, think the appropriate role for the government is to provide programs like unemployment insurance to help people through difficult times.
But while Congress wrangles over whether to continue funding unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks, many Americans express concern that providing benefits for that long a period may do more harm than good.
Most voters, in fact, still worry that the federal government will do too much in trying to turn the economy around.

The survey of 1,000 Adults nationwide was conducted on November 30-December 1, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Interestingly, 25% of investors like the idea of a government-managed economy, only slightly less than the number of non-investors (29%) who favor the concept.
While nearly half of Democrats (49%) think the government's appropriate economic role is to provide helpful programs, 42% of those in President Obama's party say the government should manage the economy completely. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Republicans, by contrast, believe the government should stay out of economic decisions, but 39% favor a government that provides programs like unemployment insurance.
Among adults not affiliated with either of the parties, 40% support government-provided programs, 23% go for full government management of the economy

Why is it that 27% of people (and 42% of democrats) think the government is this benevolent, altruistic thing? That’s the part I’ll never understand.
I hold the government schools and the teachers and their unions accountable for this.
Because it has worked so well in the past for Russia, East Germany, Cuba, etc......

For a long time, I have held that one-third of the population just wants to be taken care of. This poll validates my theory.

Because they are on the government handout, pay no taxes, don’t work and want the govt to continue to TAKE from those who work and give it to them!

Add to that another one-third that wants to micro-manage other people’s lives. It’s a formula for grief.

For people (like me) orginally from other countries, I’ll never get the ‘logic’ of screwing the BEST system in the world so that US could be more like a 3rd world country.
It’s a reference to a term used by Lenin to describe “educated” types in the West who supported communism. I personally prefer the term “useless idiots,” but “useful idiots” is more historically accurate.
TRANSLATION:
27% of people who call themselves Americans were poorly educated by state run schools and raised by parents who neglected their responsibility to make good citizens out of their children.
27% of Americans are Marxists who do not approve of the American ideal, culture or value.
27% of Americans hate conservatives. Its okay....like abortion is not murder (to them) hating conservatives is not “real” hate, so they are allowed...just ask them.
27% of people calling themself an American believe in their rights...as well as all the invented rights that come with government controlled everything...just ask their mentor Chavez.
