Not to quibble, but the Coast Guard was formed in 1915. The were originally created in 1790 as the Revenue-Marine (later renamed Revenue Cutter Service) within the Treasury Department. The Marines were formed in 1775 according to their lineage.
The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the United States Code, which states: “The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times.” Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.
If only he would forget to fly back to America.
“As an ex-Coastie, Id say the CG is better off when he forgets about them. :-)”
“As an ex-Coastie myself, I agree.
What a flippant, arrogant, asshole. If he weren't surround by men in black, he wouldn't last 30 seconds.
Looks like 0bambi is passing tin-tacks.
Someone past a pic for reference.
thanks in advance.
The Coast Guard is no longer a branch of the U.S. military. My nephew wanted to enlist last year and that’s what he was told. He enlisted in the Navy instead.
I saw a coastie in Baghdad in 07/08. They are there.
Coast Guard is under DHS, maybe that threw him off a little since he didn’t have any military background (or probably any knowledge) before he became CIC.
I believe the CG is still a branch of the military, but just not under DOD anymore.
You are guilty of one of my pet peeves. Obama never said there were 57 states.
He said that he’d been to 57, and had one more to go, but that his staff wouldn’t allow him to go to Alaska or Hawaii. So, he actually said there are 60 states.
Even such a little thing as this is telling, I think most would say “Did you say Coast Guard” The One, has to insert “I” at every possible opportunity. “Is that what I heard?” I I I
The Coast Guard originally was under the Treasury Dept, later transferred to DOT and presently the DHS. Founded in 1790 as the Revenue Cutter or Revenue Marine. In 1915 it was combined with the Lifesaving Service and became the Coast Guard. It is the nations oldest continuous maritime service. in times of peace it serves under the DHS and during war, at the direction of the President, it serves under the US Navy. The CG, although a military service, operates under a civilian agency due to it’s unique law enforcement duties, among other reasons.
The CG through it’s unique history has traditionally operated without fanfare, so being ‘unknown” or forgotten about is pretty much SOP and not a big deal to most of us.
Carry on.
Wow, thanks for the history and information. That was great. And thank you for your service!
I heard the original too but have been going along with the misquote. Either way, the excuse given that “he was just tired from campaigning” doesn’t fly. I’ve been very tired before too but would not make such a statement. Even if drunk too.
I hope you didn’t take me seriously. It isn’t really a pet peeve - it’s just something I noticed last week when I re-watched that clip after Sarah Palin posted her Greetings to All 57 States note on Facebook.
ESPECIALLY since he is so brilliant and such a mesmerizing speaker...
