No sooner did Attorney General-elect Kamala Harris declare victory than the stargazers of the political universe begin speculating where she will end up in California's Democratic constellation.
Right in the center, was the short answer.
"She is going to have an incredibly long reach," said former state party Chairman Art Torres. "Her office will be in the forefront of everything from civil rights to the environment to consumer issues.
"She will certainly have no problem making national impact," Torres said.
Judging by her victory speech Tuesday, Harris is already thinking big.
Her bipartisan transition team features no fewer than two former U.S. secretaries of state - George Shultz and Warren Christopher - plus ex-Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton and Constance Rice, an L.A. civil rights attorney.
"She is really the exciting one to watch," said Bill Whalen, a former speechwriter for Gov. Pete Wilson and Hoover Institution fellow. "The question is, how much of a workhorse is she, versus a show horse?"
If Harris falls short, there's no shortage of Democrats hoping to be at the center of things.
First up, there's Gov.-elect Jerry Brown, who has spent most of his adult life attracting national attention.
Then there's Lt. Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom, who many feel is already running to replace what could be a one-term governor.

Does she have an amazing ‘narrative’? Isn’t that what counts in Dem circles?
Interestingly, the pro wrestler Kamala the Uganda Giant was born James Harris.
So, what do her friends caller? “Kammie”?
I am quite ceertain that Ms. Harris is just a garden variety socialist who will try to make CA’s government even more intrusive and expensive.
CA voters are brain dead.
The main thing is you can see the so-called Republicans that are involved with her. This just illustrates more than ever it’s the elite political class against the rest of us.
They are all pimps and hacks.
Our work has just begun.
I’ve a feeling the next two years of Omullah’s rein will be far more dangerous than the first two.
Hmmmmmmm.....
I think Kamala Harris is the DEMS answer to Sarah Palin. Don't be surprised to see her picked for VP.
American voters are brain dead...
I believe she's far to the left of your garden variety socialist. More like a sewer rate variety socialist....
She does have a mean look about her.
She is Barack Obama in a skirt. Do NOT underestimate her, the MSM is going to pump her up the same way they did Barry. Bi-racial like Barry, Harvard educated like Barry, attorney like Barry pretended to be. Rides the racial grievance gravy train like Barry, Al, and Jesse, she is another going to be a threat on the national scene, lark my words.
Could be.
Perhaps Mr. Obama will try to do an end run around the Congress by the active use of executive orders? That could muck up things nicely.
Thank you. It appears she has a ‘narrative’ to beat the band.
She comes across as a very aggressive and impatient individual.
She will not get the pass that Obama did.
That’s just what the country needs, another Obama from the Land of Socialist Failure, California. This woman just squeaked out a win, and they’re already pumping her up for big things? The politics of this country become more of a farce all the time.
Well... considering the lineage ...
How is the AG of Cali going to effect a gun toting hillbilly in PA?
I wondered what Kamala was doing since leaving professional wrestling.
Unlike Obama, she did not have an absent father, a distant mother and a globe-trotting upbringing.
Her father is a professor, her mother an oncologist and she grew up in an affluent two-parent home in the San Francisco suburbs. Her narrative is closer to John Kerry's than Obama's: "coddled child of privilege turns college radical."
Also she did not go to Harvard, but to Howard for undergrad and UC Hastings for law school.
