"Don't hunt down my son," says mother of WikiLeaks founder

(Reuters) - The mother of Australian WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Wednesday she was distressed by an international police alert for her son's arrest and did not want him "hunted down and jailed."

Global police agency Interpol issued a "red notice" on Tuesday to assist in the arrest of Assange, founder of the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, who is wanted in Sweden on suspicion of sexual crimes.

Assange, 39, a former computer hacker now at the center of a global controversy after WikiLeaks released a trove of classified U.S. diplomatic cables at the weekend, denies the Swedish allegations.

Christine Assange, who runs a puppet theater in Australia's Queensland state, said she was worried about her son's wellbeing as Australia's government joined the United States in launching an investigation into whether Assange and WikiLeaks had broken security or criminal laws.

"He's my son and I love him and obviously I don't want him hunted down and jailed. I'm reacting as any mother would. I'm distressed," she told Australian radio. "A lot of stuff that's written about me and Julian is untrue."

Assange, who was born in Townsville, Queensland has gone underground since WikiLeaks controversially began publishing more than 250,000 secret U.S. government documents.

Assange's arrest warrant was issued by Sweden's International Public Prosecution Office in Gothenburg on November 18.

Actually, if you use the crime analogy, Assange is a fence, the real crime is done by those that feed the information to Assange. They are the burglars(espionage).

If we come down too hard on wikileaks we may be asking for government censorship of the WWW.

The private needs a blindfold and a cigarette, Assange I am not so sure.

"He's my son and I love him and obviously I don't want him hunted down and jailed."

The mothers of the Afghanis who's identities and locations he gave the Taliban didn't want their children hunted down and murdered.

He definitely is a criminal. This is not a first amendment issue.

He does need to be hunted down and tried for espionage.

Right you are.

Did this jerk really think that he was going to go about his life without any blow back from his actions?

He almost did. Remember this is the second set of leaks about the U.S. He's out there giving interviews and still operating after the first one.

This wouldn’t be a problem if she had taught him that just because you “can” do something doesn’t mean you “should” do it.

The first one was not of this magnitude.

And the next one appears to be designed to take down America’s banks. He is striking at us like a terrorist. Let’s stop coddling him.

“hunted down and jailed.”
Wrong verb.

Agreed. I prefer hunted and nailed.

Given the large number of spec ops and other military folks being put at risk, or who have comrades being put at risk, by this jackass, I’m surprised he hasn’t just disappeared.

I’d like to see him just not come back from the market one day.

The only thing this proves is that mothers blindly love their children. Of course she doesn’t want him hurt. Nor do 99% of the mothers of kids brought into US courts for armed robbery and murder. I have no idea why this is news.
