Cash-strapped cities and towns across America are having to pay out millions of dollars on new signs under orders of the federal government - because they are the wrong letter size. Washington officials have demanded that every single street sign in the nation which is currently in capitals must be replaced because they are supposedly too hard to read. In their place will be new signs with the same green background and the same font, the only difference being that they are in lower-case letters. For some cities the cost will be millions of dollars at a time when budgets are being cut and salaries frozen.

No... Obama Blvd ....:^)
Yes, what union is making the replacement signs? Is there federal money involved, or just edict from the feds to the locals that they must do the sign replacements on their own?
“So whose nephew owns the sign company?”
Your local Sign Maker & Hanger Union... more payoffs.
Not using all caps makes sense. Most of us don’t like reading posts in all caps.
What doesn’t make sense is the immediacy. Just make replacement or new signs use upper and lower case. Why throw out a sign that still is in good shape. It’s not as if the world will end due to all caps signs.
How does the FEDERAL highway department have any say in a CITY street naming/signing issue anyway?
I know, federal highway dollars at work and all that. But they shouldn’t be able to mandate on a miniscule scale every little issue.
What doesn’t make sense is the federal government butting in to the business of local municipalities.
It doesn’t make sense, of course, until you understand the nature of tyranny.
Theft
This is an outrage! I find all-caps to be easier to read :p
Why not limit street names to no more than ten letters, and require appending the city name and zip code as well. If we need uniformity, let’s make it efficient as well!
In other news...
U.S. cities forced to spend millions changing street signs... because they are in capital letters
Just when I think it can’t get worse, it dives off the cliff again.
We need to destroy the horrible leviathan fedgov. It won’t die, it won’t stop itself. It has to be starved and choked to death.
This presents an excellent opportunity for "conservative" media to expose and ridicule the foibles of the Obamaton tyranny in Washington.
Not even close.
And no, don't even ask me. I do NOT want to give them any ideas!
Why can't you see that this is being done for the love of you little people who really don't know any better? OBTW, 53% of you nice people out there voted for the guy, so quitcha bellyachin'.
thanks justiceseeker93. The whole point of so-called stimulus *seems* to be to for blood pressure.
If you can't read it, you can't see it or you can't comprehend it, you shouldn't be driving!

Indeed. This also reminds me of the numerous languages voting ballots (for example) are printed in so that immigrants (no doubt includes illegal) who don't want to assimilate to their new country...can vote in their "native" language. Do those people drive? If so, can they read the highway signs...but not the ballots (or other gov't "services" documents)?
A tad fascist.
Actually...I am possessed of a highly overactive imagination...this is only the tip of the iceberg.
However, your point is well taken, justiceseeker93. This is yet another example of officious intermeddling by the federal government.
Oh, but wait, I forgot--it's for our own good. That makes it Ok. (For those who need it, here's the /sarc thingy)
Have a great day!
I’ve noticed over the past year that the “mile marker” signs on the interstates have doubled. There is now a sign at every half mile instead of just every mile. When did that happen? How much did it cost?
I’ve also noticed he “your tax dollars at work” signs. How about obama’s plane pull a banner behind it saying the same hing?
