When an impressive contrail was spotted off the California coast last week, it sparked widespread reports of a mystery missile launch in the area a theory the Pentagon squashed after initial investigations. But, the odd contrail fooled more than the public and media, and was even seen from space.
After watching footage of the Nov. 8 contrail, Patrick Minnis, a contrail expert in the Science Directorate at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., assumed it came from a missile, as many others did.
He even said so in response to a phone call from a reporter.

It has been pretty darn well debunked. I think the only news aspect remaining is the role of KCBS in the affair.
I have not lied to you at all. Where have I lied? I’ve just asked you to give me some proof, and you haven’t. Instead, you just insult me.
If anything, you are spreading paranoia without an ounce of proof that we were attacked by a foreign nation, then it is YOU that is being treasonous. You still haven’t provided a bit of proof, and you keep ducking me when I ask you for some data.
Seriously, just admit you have absolutely NO proof and you are just pushing your conspiracy theory, I’d have an ounce more respect for you if you just came clean and admitted that you have an irrational opinion based on no actual data.
Show me where I lie.
Show your work.
BTW, do you want my address so you can send the FBI to my house?
Well, I can give you a sense of how far away you can be and still see launches. I watched the September 17th launch of a Minuteman III from Vandenburg and I live a long long ways away. It was very neat. A GBI is going up on December 6th - looking forward to that one too — hopefully have clear skies.
To further clarify.
If we’re trying to investigate and get some kind of facts about this missile launch then where it was launched from is worth a good look.
If memory and song knowledge serves, Catalina is about 26 miles off the coast and much closer to the currently assumed launch site.
If we can say that there are some locations that an ICBM launch within 8 or so miles of the island would be noticed and some locations the launch would not be noticed - that would be useful knowledge.
Then we would plot a trajectory and use a tool such as GoogleEarth to test the hypothesis and see if there’s something validated or invalidated.
I am an expert, I have scuba dived all around Catalina. And I never once saw any subs or underground launching stations.
LOL
But, evidently, I am being treasonous!
Why would you need more than one? I had one which was all encompassing.
I understand you seek proof it was a missile. Have you ever sat on your roof to watch NASA launches from Kennedy Space Center? I have on numerous occasions.
Have you ever looked up to see jet contrails? I have all my life.
In this case, what I saw in the vid, looked just like a rocket launch I have witnessed from my rooftop. It looked nothing like jet contrails I have been experiencing all my life.
Obviously this is not proof. But it is empirical knowledge gleaned during my years on this earth.
There is an old saying. "You can fool some the people sometime, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."
Only someone who has never witnessed a rocket launch, nor never witnessed a jet contrail, could be fooled into believing this was a jet contrail.
CBS put together a graphic map with the approximate location of the missile launch point. Was a circle a few miles in radius. Located West-NorthWest of the northern tip of Catalina. Right near where there is a bunch of small islands. Tried to find it again, but could not find it quickly. Location based on the Helicopter crews estimated location.
Okay expert, tell them how deep the water gets right off the coast here. Puddling around the lagoons and slopes of Catalina is pointless to any discussion.
Not really. Catalina is due south of Palos Verdas. The launch point was due west almost from Palos Verdas. North west of the tip of Catalina. So really Catalina has about as much to do with this story as Palos Verdas. Probably a lot less since the north west part of Catalina is uninhabited. Except of course for hikers, campers and boats moored in the two northern harbors.
You are right that pinpointing the exact or near exact launch point is the next step for the missile theory proponents. But we are seriously understaffed. Have the entire Obama administration and his Pentagon and his Justice Departments apparently working against us. They are painting us as kooks so there will be a shortage of potential man power.
I just thank god that our President and his Entire Staff and even their relatives were outside this country when this missile event occurred. We really dodged a bullet there.
OK, now I know you are truly a conspiracy theorist! I was being sarcastic, and you couldn't figure that out. I have been all over the island, mostly underwater. But, as a scuba diver, I don't go much more than 80 feet, as there are limits to nitrogen absorption.
You actually thought I was being serious, that explains why you actually thought it was a missile. You are gullible and lack judgment.
Have pointed this out now three time at least. Everyone of your posts that began with basically, 'there is no evidence', was a lie. We have a video of a rocket launch according to many experts. That is evidence. So when you say there is no evidence, it is a lie. And I know exactly why you are saying that, you do not fool everyone. Been dealing with this stuff online ever since the Clinton Administration. That is why I labeled such posts as spam. Not because I do not like you as a person, but because I know what your intent was.
Yeah. That's the ticket. I better go run away and hide now. You are on to me.
Looks like you are having a bit of trouble selling your snake oil. Maybe you are on the wrong site to sell your product. You might have better luck at yahoo chat, or your facebook account. You might make a sale there.
But, no sale here.
Not selling snake oil, just asking the missile crowd for proof.
There is none.
Versus tons of data about contrails, where planes were, identical contrails the next day, comparative photos of other planes, etc.
The missile truthers are defensive because no one has taken them seriously, and they have no data to prove their fantasy.
You have a video that you are interpreting as a rocket launch, your interpretation has no data or proof behind it.
Not a lie, not evidence.
So, again, I ask, where is your proof? Data, facts, provable information. You still have none, just “gee that looks like a missile”
I don’t accuse you of lying, you have an opinion that you believe, its a stupid opinion, but its yours.
Yet, you want me arrested for treason. Do you realize how stupid that sounds?
I think Obama has a facebook account. You should try selling there. Lots of gullible people there.
I think Palin has a facebook account. That proves what? Eh? What?
So, what are you selling? The same snake oil? It was a jet contrail?
Same answer. Try your facebook account. You might find a sale there. Just not here.
Experience matters.
So really Catalina has about as much to do with this story as Palos Verdas.
Are you referring to Palos Verdes on Catalina Island or Rancho Palos Verdes on the mainland? And is Catalina Island closer to the launch site than LA and the camera man? If not, any observations, cams in Palos Verdes?
the north west part of Catalina is uninhabited.
Here's a link with panorama view from Catalina Airport. It looks like a good observation post. Anyone there at the time, observations, cameras?
You are right that pinpointing the exact or near exact launch point is the next step for the missile theory proponents.
The very brief sequences of video tape, absent more information or more of the video, isn't going to influence many by itself when the research supporting alternative hypotheses is taken into account. It's an unbalanced scale now.
I think both sides are mostly in agreement that, at the least, the full video shoot and data needs to come out. That could answer a lot more question more definitively.
Well that's a tad overreacting. Hard not to get frustrated I think, well I know I have, but I'm trying to give it up.
:)
"Release more video!" is common ground.
