As a blind Muslim woman, Mona Ramouni has had to make do without a guide dog her whole life.
The 28-year-old's strictly religious parents would not allow a dog in the house, considering the animal unclean.
But then Miss Ramouni stumbled across a website article about miniature guide horses in April 2008.
'It was something that I never thought about for myself,' she said.
The psychology student used three years of savings from her job at a Braille proofreading company to pay for a horse to be trained to act as her guide.
Since welcoming three-year-old guide horse Cali into her Dearborn, Michigan, home last year, Miss Ramouni has seen her life turned around.

Yay for her, but as she’ll discover, she won’t bring the horse onto airplanes or into stores or restaurants the same way she would a dog. Dogs can be trained to poop where and when their opwner wants, horses...not so much.
Good luck getting horsie into a restaurant.
Such a practical solution. Ay carumba.
In one of the pictures at the site, it kind of looks like the horse is wearing a device to catch excrement. Sort of a reverse feed bag.
Depending on the restaurant, horsie's relatives may already be there.
Badump-ssshhh.
Thank you. I'll be here all the week. Please try the veal and don't forget to tip your waitress.
How about a guide goat or a guide pig?
You HOPE it's veal.
Great.
She will probably celebrate by bringing that thing into the first McDonald’s she runs across and that thing is going to drop the biggest manure pile some children will ever see right there in the queue line.
Ever seen a blind girl clean up a big pile of horse squeeze?
Me neither....
keep dad away from cute lil horsy
I love horses and I’m glad she has this one, but what a bunch of typical psycho-Islamic stupidness. Trust me on this, dogs are a lot cleaner and easier to take care of than a horse, even a mini.
Beautiful girl. Too bad she’s trapped in such an insane situation.
I just knew someone would catch that.
LOL
I’d rather have a horse than a dog any day, but it’s undeniable that there will be more problems (if only because fewer people have guide horses) and truly bizarre that her parents wouldn’t be more rational about this. Except, of course, that Islam extinguishes all rational thought.
I noticed that, but doubt store and restaurant owners, airlines and other places of business will allow a horse, with or without a bag o’ s**t hanging behind them. I dunno, but somehow I think sanitation laws will take precedence.
A seeing eye pot-bellied pig would have been a better choice. Oh, wait a minute...
Guide goat? Why not? Daddy is a strict muzzie. Daddy wants to have some fun also.
OMG!
I wasn’t even thinking at first:
WHY is she allowed outside without a male, family escort in the first place??
Only infidel women would need something like this...
Actually, horses can be housebroken and can be trained to let you know when they need to go out. The approach is a little different than training dogs, though.
