U.S. sends $727 million to community health centers

Money will go to clinics in 40 states that provide care even to those who cannot pay -

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Friday announced $727 million will go to help fix up community health centers across the country, the first of $11 billion for the centers promised by the U.S. healthcare reform law.

The money will go to 143 community health centers — which provide services regardless of patients' ability to pay — in about 40 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, the Health and Human Services department said.

Healthcare reforms signed into law by President Barack Obama in March call for $11 billion in funding over the next five years for the centers, which HHS said currently serve nearly 19 million patients, about 40 percent of whom are uninsured. [...]

They probably just channel funds to abortionists.

as far as I know, Community Health Centers do not perform abortion.

From the article, Planned Parenthood’s Obamacare Grand Slam:

How much abortion funding?

Perhaps the largest pot of gold awaiting Planned Parenthood under Obamacare is the $7 billion that has been earmarked for the Community Health Centers program for primary health care, which specifically includes gynecological and obstetrics care. This money appears in the bill without restrictions on the use of the money for abortion.

It is not restricted by the Hyde Amendment, since the Hyde Amendment applies only to funds flowing through the annual Health and Human Services appropriations bill.

The bill also contains $5 billion for a temporary high-risk health insurance pool program, and $6 billion in grants and loans for health co-ops. These are directly appropriated funds with no abortion limitations.

The bill contains a provision under which private plans that cover elective abortion would qualify for a federal subsidy. Every enrollee would be required to pay an abortion surcharge, which would be used to pay for other people’s abortions.

And, of course, abortion coverage could be mandated if the Secretary of HHS simply places abortion on the list of “preventive” care services. In fact, the bill grants tremendous power to the Secretary of HHS and other federal entities to determine what will be covered under the health care program.

The Mikulski Amendment does not preclude abortion from being listed as a “preventive” service, in which case, coverage would be mandated. Mikulski refused to revise the amendment to exclude abortion.

In addition, pro-abortion legislators blocked the inclusion of language that would prevent penalties for health care providers who refuse to participate in abortions. The so-called conscience protections that do exist in the bill are extremely narrow.

it is an actual organization called Community Health Centers. They even have a website. And they do some good stuff helping people with no insurance, bad insurance or people with limited incomes in rural and in inner city areas. They have no connection I can see to Planned Parenthood.

Community Health Centers are an actual organization. They do not provide abortion.

They are completely different than Planned Parenthood.

People don’t seem to understand that Community Health centers are not just any clinic-—they are an actual organization that runs medical clinics. And as far as I know, none of their medical clinics provides abortions.

Hmmm. I’m confused. These health centers all ready existed. All ready provided free health care to those that couldn’t afford it. Now we’re sending billions of taxpayer dollars to fund them. Sounds like lottery day for the centers that were all ready funded somehow. This has been my major frustration with the whole health care debate. People got free health care. Even under Obamacare, people that opt out and pay the fine will get free health care at emergency rooms and ‘free’ clinics. Why does anyone need health insurance at all?

How can we block funding on this?

Won't happen. This is kind of like Social Security - you cut it, you commit political suicide, even in the face of an electorate that is sick of out of control government spending. This WILL be portrayed as helping "the poor"... Much like Bill Clinton's famous "its for the children" technique.

I get so ticked off. I have employees that opt out of health insurance because they can just go to the ‘free’ clinics and get everything they need. Including Birth Control Pills for next to nothing. I also have employee who have health insurance but still go to the free clinic, because it’s so cheap. One visit and they get 12 months worth of birth control for about $40.

But I better not think about taking away their health insurance.

They get lousy care, but they don’t care. As long as it’s cheap or free.

I recommend reading Stanley Kurtz's new book: "Radical-in-Chief" to get the complete picture of what is going on here.

Uh, no. These are individual nonprofits that receive grant monies from HHS. Any number of them provide full reproductive services. See here and here for announcements of some of the grantees.

I don't have the time to go through tons of websites to find out if one of them actually comes out and directly says that it provides abortion or if they use the euphemism "reproductive health services" (or the like).

We have one in our county. I use them for primary care. They are run by local board members. Many of the doctors in our county do not as a rule, take medicaid or medicare patients, and people with out insurance have to pay up front. This center sets up a payment plan, and perhaps a discount.

They also provide assistance with medications. You fill out the paperwork, and bring in supporting docs for your income, then they fill out paperwork which goes directly to the Drug Company. The company sends back your meds. It costs the patient around $10.00 for a 3 month supply.

With the further reductions in medicare reimbursements, even more doctors are declining patients. My husband's doctor sent us a notice that they would no longer accept Medicare Insurance due to the reduction in reimbursement.

A health center near your parents and grandparents may very well be the best option they have for care at this time. It is infinitely better than clogging the hospital emergency rooms with patients who actually just need primary care. It is also better than hanging out at the ER and potentially getting exposed to super-germs during your 8 hr wait.

Our local center is more like it used to be in the early 60’s before the government got involved. If you have no insurance, and not enough money to pay, you can set up a payment plan. If your income is near poverty, and you don't qualify for medicaid, they are allowed to give you a discount.

I think you are confusing generic health centers in communities with Community Health Systems, Inc.(NYSE: CYH).

I also have used one at times for primary care. This one does not provide abortions or have any apparent links with PP.

“This one does not provide abortions or have any apparent links with PP.”

At the current time, none of them are allowed to provide abortions, due to federal funding. Even if it was allowed, there are only about 10% (in liberal states) that might try to do it.

We are an overwhelming social conservative county, so no danger here of having to deal with it. The board would not allow it. Nearest planned parenthood is in another county.
