A mysterious smoke plume that looked like a missile firing off the California coast on Monday may have been an aircraft and not a missile, U.S. military officials said.

“35 miles from shore”
BINGO!
I don’t think so. More like Pentagon playing games with Captain Zero.
No, W-537 is way off from the so-called launch site.
It is at Santa Barbara and goes WSW. This chart shows it -
The launch point was labeled as just North of Santa Catalina island.
Oh please, NO!
and has a solid rocket engine.
Incorrect. If the information you posted is accurate, airspace would have been restricted for a period of 29 hours commencing at 1200 PDT on 9 November 2010; today, and ending at 1700 PDT on 10 November 2010, tomorrow.
Not so—remember that Pacific Standard Time is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, so 0100 on the 10th GMT is actually 5:00 pm (1700) on the 9th PST. The dates and times are all keyed off GMT. In any case, as was pointed out upthread, this NOTAM is for today, not yesterday when the contrail popped up, so it’s kind of a moot point.

“Remind me NEVER to fly with you. How do you file your flight plans,...transcendentally?”
Not getting your point.
Where am I off here?
When I finally saw the video I thought it looked a bit slow for a rocket.
Again, I’ve spent plenty of time piloting aircraft and make a point to observe Vandenberg launches. I’ve spent more time then the average Southern Californian with eyes skyward trust me. And I’ve done my share of backyard astronomy as well. Observing weather too is something all pilots do.
I am confident this is a contrail illusion at this point, seen from a specific area. I’m not hearing of rocket launch observations from elsewhere at this point which should occur.
My mistake. Time to stop multitasking for today.
It wasn’t an ICBM. The trajectory is wrong. It was a conventional short range missile.
US Airways flight 808 from Hawaii to Phoenix
Look at this and it’s pretty obvious what was going on...

Some postulating this flight as culprit...

I have reviewed all of the video that I could find and I am convinced this video shows a plume from a solid fuel even taking into account the location of the sun, etc...this looks like a rocket or missile launch to me.
I don’t buy the airliner “cover”.
It wouldn’t take this long to come up the answer if it were a commercial aircraft.
This whole story is being swept under the rug.
“This whole story is being swept under the rug.”
Nah. Airliner.
Pretty obvious to me.
Are aircraft we see on the horizon flying at an altitude of 3"?
I heard today they are really trying to pass that off as airliner contrails -
I’ve forgotten more about contrails than anyone a that website has ever known. It was a short range solid rocket.
