"Wow! editor of 'Jane's missiles and rockets' says -- "it's a solid propellant missile" "
CBS link
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/earlyshow/main7040379.shtml
Both the Navy and the Air Force insisted they had not launched any missiles and the North American Air Defense Command - which is supposed to track incoming missiles - declared it had not been fired by any other military. But nobody could say what it was.
But Doug Richardson, the editor of Janes Missiles and Rockets, examined the video for the Times of London and said he was left with little doubt.
"Its a solid propellant missile," he told the Times. "You can tell from the efflux [smoke]."
Richardson said it could have been a ballistic missile launched from a submarine or an interceptor, the defensive anti-missile weapon used by Navy surface ships.
I had to look up to see what Jane's Missles and Rockets was, it looks like they're something to take seriously.

If you want to find out what aircraft, missiles, or Navy Ships are really capable of, you look to Jane’s. It is (or was) part of intel office libraries.

“That might be true up until the time of launch. After that all bets are off. There is no way to discretely launch an SLBM. Everyone on the boat would know.”
I wasn’t referring to the boom/swoosh of the actual launch but how the Navy did some hush/hush stuff aboard the boats.
Below is a link to a great book describing how a “new” Radioman (nsg/ct) told the ship’s captain to drill holes in his boat. Few sailors on the boat knew anything of the real mission of the CT.

If it’s a plane/jet, then there’s a known location, a known time, and a known trajectory.
That should make it simple to find that jet, don’t you think?

Hell, the CIA even made a computer video of how it happened. Hey wideminded: Oh look. Someone else remembers it (though they mention the CIA).
Yes, the CIA was the agency that made the video that described the rising nose theory. But they released it months after the crash, not 5 minutes into the original coverage.
To: wideminded
Bear in mind that I am not trying to convince anyone I saw what I saw.
Not sure why you're trying to convince me I didn't see what I saw.
Of course, you won't be successful.
BTW, *WHY* was the *CIA* producing ANY video about this?

Why?
It was summer of 1996, about 2 months before the presidential election. How do you think the Dems would have faired had it become widely known that terrorists had shot down an airliner over NY City? Conservatives would have been swept into every office.

FWIW - A side note regarding this event - a long time pastor friend of mine who has been a meteorologist as well as a synoptic analyst for the NSA in the 70's had the following comment regarding this phenomenon:
"THE CONCLUSION I REACHED WAS THAT IT WAS A JET CONTRAIL, PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT EXPANDED. IF I COULD HAVE SEEN THE RAWINSONDE SOUNDINGS FROM THAT AREA I COULD KNOW FOR SURE. A MISSILE TRAIL WOULD NOT HAVE HELD TOGETHER SO WELL."

Well, here we are on day two of this story...
... anyone here still convinced into hysterics that this was a Chinese submarine-launched missile, or have they all come to terms with this event being a not-all-that-unusual jet contrail?

After a nights sleep, this might have been one of those Navy actions where only a few crew members on the launch boat/ship knew what was going on.
There are so many theories out there (thanks to the news) that I don't know what to think but some interesting items have popped up in the grass. The NOTAMs is a glaring example.
If this was a test by a Navy boomer to launch an ICBM, it would have been tracked by numerous sites in the Pacific, like AF atop Haleakala on Maui and Barking Sands on Kauai as well as an Aegis cruiser somewhere at sea. Of course, none of those will say anything.....which is a good thing. If it wasn't our test, there would have been P-3s combing the coast to locate and id the perpatrator and so far I haven't seen reports of any such activity but must admit I haven't read through all the posts.
Back to the theory of a Navy test; if so they did a good job that it wasn't leaked to the LA Times or any of the other rags in the area, although someone got a camera on the event which makes me reconsider the NOTAMs as likely and noticed. That the Pentagon is accused of being behind the coverup doesn't surprise me either; they probably ran a test when a major leaker was out of country.
The idea that's floated that it was an A/C contrail is total BS from what I've seen. Contrails aren't seen at those low levels and if it was a fighter going to afterburner all the would be seen is flame, no smoke.
Breaker......I just saw Michio Kaku on Fox say it was a commercial airliner's contrail rising from the horizon, which mathematically make sense if you're thirty five miles away standing on the beach with a camera pointed in the right direction. He fudged the speed and angels and didn't mention whether it was approaching in distress and never gave a reasonable explanation of the flight's id or sched. Go figure.

I have no idea. Personally it looks like a missile to me. I just wanted to interject my friend's scientific based comments, to show that there are ways of determining what it really was. We just aren't going to be told by those that can make that determination.

I posted the following on another site:
Even superficail study of world history is the study of repeated conspiracy, collusion, murder and the petty madness of humanity except when it comes to the US, Here insane thing just happen for no apparent reason.
It goes to the same point, I used to hold this country in higher esteem, and with a sense of pride. Shit like this happens and there’s no coherent answer?
I shruged quite some time ago.
