NEW DELHI (AP) -- President Barack Obama heralded the relationship between the United States and India as a "defining partnership" of the 21st century Monday during a grand ceremony marking his visit to the world's largest democracy.
Obama's limousine was escorted to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the palatial residence of India's president, by guards on horseback.

Will somebody please write them and ask if we can swap him for a good, competent Indian leader?
This, in a country where the crowd goes batty if a sacred cow pees in the street.
He should feel “honored”.
I see that Barry paid homage to Gandhi yesterday - kind words of admiration for Gandhi’s ascetic lifestyle, while spending 200 million taxpayer dollars a day to do so.
Look at the boost he’s giving the Indian economy or should I say WE are giving the Indian economy little wonder they cater to him. I wonder if he will be visiting the Indian slums? It’s so embarrassing to think he is groveling to them for jobs for Americans. I think Presidents should have a budget and have to live within it.
Well Gandhi lived on $2/day and Obama needs $200 mil/day.
The difference is just a bunch of zeros, just like the man, Obama.
they can keep him.
India is footing the bill for some of this nonsense, too. I wonder what Gandhi would've thought about a $3000 bottle of scotch?
What! There is no Likker worth that. Give that boy a shot!
MFOP.
This trip makes no sense at all.
Well, in a way it does make sense. not surprising right after the mid-terms, where he got whompped. He is a total self egotist. He needed to get to a third world country where he new they would lick his a$$. Both for this own egotistical self, and for the media for the rest of the world to see. A giant dog and pony show of self importance.
Erm, they don’t really do that here. They do believe cows are sacred, in that they are seen as a symbol of life-giving, and are therefore not eaten or (usually) penned up, but beyond that, they’re mostly a nuisance. They’re not really objects of veneration, in that their every action is not seen as some holy event.
I watched the inspection he did yesterday, and it was ok. I do have to say, whatever else you may think of him (and I don’t think highly of him at all), he did give a very clear, snappy salute to the Marines that put him on the chopper when he arrived in Mumbai.
And as an aside, I like the idea of Marine One being a Blackhawk. It’s a pretty sweet bird, and less dumpy-looking than the flying truck the President usually uses here in the US. If I were ever made Prez, I’d request either the Blackhawk or a PAVE LOW (although these were recently retired).
He and Moochelle did a wonderful rendition of the Cuban Hat Dance for admiring crowds.
He is in India and spends his time there discussing Islam.
No doubt the Hindu country is thrilled to hear about how wonderful Islam really is........while he’s in Mumbai where the terror attack took place.
“This, in a country where the crowd goes batty if a sacred cow pees in the street.”
Now I’m imagining Michelle doing the same.
“Will somebody please write them and ask if we can swap him for a good, competent Indian leader?”
I’d settle for a half decent Java programmer.
“India embraced the green technology”..(Maybe he wants to sell them some windmills and solar panels.)
If the hoof fits.....
:)
“India is not the only emerging power in the world..” I thought about 7 mins ago he just said India is not emerging...it has emerged.”
