Citing health overhaul, AARP hikes employee costs

AARP's endorsement helped secure passage of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Now the seniors' lobby is telling its employees their insurance costs will rise partly as a result of the law.

In an e-mail to employees, AARP says health care premiums will increase by 8 percent to 13 percent next year because of rapidly rising medical costs.

And AARP adds that it's changing copayments and deductibles to avoid a 40 percent tax on high-cost health plans that takes effect in 2018 under the law. Aerospace giant Boeing also has cited the tax in asking its workers to pay more. Shifting costs to employees lowers the value of a health care plan and acts like an escape hatch from the tax.

"Most plan co-pays and deductibles have been modified," Jennifer Hodges, AARP's director of compensation and benefits, wrote employees in an Oct. 25 e-mail. "Plan value changes were necessary not only from a cost management standpoint but also to ensure that AARP's plans fall below the threshold for high-cost group plans under health care reform."

I can’t tell you all the gray hairs I know who voted for the Man-Child. Most of them now highly regret this decision.

Enjoy your Hope & Change Grandma!

AARP sold out the old folks and became an Insurance agency, only they were too stupid to realise that when the Government takes over Health care, they will end up with nothing.

They sold out for short term rich’s and in the long term they will dissappear as more seniors drop them.

As beautiful as a teachers' union firing employees of the union that wanted to unionize.

There’s a gray haired retiree,Obama voter at my gym who continually wears an AARP shirt while he works out. The 60 something man thinks ObamaCare will be wonderful. His solution to rising health care costs is “raise taxes on the top 5% of the population” -—” government owes us retirees”-—his quotes.

I’d like to tell him that one of the features of ObamaCare is the death with dignity program-—meaning:

No health care for YOU. Step aside old man, your time is up.

I wouldn’t touch anything that AARP peddles for all the tea in China!

I recognized their ‘leanings’ years ago. No AARP card for me.

I do have contact with AARP. That is, from the time I remove their propaganda mailings from my mailbox until I deposit them into the garbage.

This is rich.

Part of this is the HC law, and part medical inflation?

Excuse me, the HC law and Obama caused both of those.

I really like the part about how it doesn’t benefit anyone to cross the “threshold of care” i.e.; have a good plan. So for all AARP’s talk about “covering more people”, they’ve actually covered people less.

Slime. Both them AND the congress that did this. And the idiots that voted them in.

It is absolutely shocking that mandates and increased regulations on health insurance companies would raise costs to policyholders. Who could have predicted this?

I think this story is garbage.

The proposed increases are normal in most past years and is not because of the new law

Yeah, but the whole mantra for Obamacare has been that normal is an awful, horrible thing that must be corrected immediately, and AARP parroted the lie that passage of the bill would put a stop to rising costs, even bringing them down. They deserve every bit of flack they get on this for having lied and participated in the smearing of those who tried to point out the flaws of the plan.
