As they assess Tuesday's disaster, some Obama advisers are singling out the recently departed chief of staff. Richard Wolffe on the clash between Emanuel's personal ambition and his party loyalty.
As chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rahm Emanuel built a Democratic majority in the House. As President Obama's chief of staff, he devised White House strategy toward Capitol Hill. So when the Democrats were going down in flames Tuesday night, where was Obama's chief political architect? Half a continent away, campaigning for himself.
Half a continent away, campaigning for himself in the most pro-Obama place on the planet, largely sheltered from the Republican rubble crashing down on his party all across the country.
And his old colleagues in Washington arent too happy about it. Some of them shake their heads in disbelief that Emanuel would bolt at precisely the juncture when the Democrats needed to shape their strategy and message during the homestretch of what everyone knew would be the toughest election cycle in years.

Chicago mayoral hopeful Rahm Emanuel was the architect of the House Democrats 2006 victories which resulted in Nancy Pelosi becoming Speaker of the House. Emanuel, then the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Commitee on Tuesday night saw his work undone, as CNN predicted that the Republicans will retake the House. So what is Emanuel doing Tuesday night? Quipped an aide: “He’s with friends and a bottle of Jack Daniels.”
Emanuel Rahm? I despise him but I admire the way he put together the work that gave the Democrats the House. Now that’s all been washed away.
Nothing like the sight of Democrats being mad at their one time savior.
Heh
I don’t believe any of this at all. I’m convinced that Rahm left when he did because he told Obama not to make the election about Obama and Obama’s agenda, but to sit out the election and let each race play out purely in local fashion. I think Rahm told Obama that to nationalize the elections would be a disaster. When Obama rejected Rahm’s advice, Rahm quit right away because he knew that Obama would fire him anyway for being proven right after November 2, because Obama’s ego would be unable to tolerate the sight of Rahm because Rahm was right and Obama was wrong.
The only truth in any of this at all is that White House insiders are using the dead guy as a convenient scapegoat, and exacting revenge for his having been right all along. No doubt they consider this poetic justice.
What time will the White House schedule the daily Two-Minutes Hate for Rahm Emanuel Goldstein?
Ok...everyone in line for bus undercarriage duty.
So Rahm essentially used a Yamamoto Stategery, in that he awoke a sleeping Giant...
He did a great job selling crap as chocolate.
But customers dont come back.
You have nailed it.
Sleeping Giant, yes.
Funny, I can see November from my house, again. Im starting to like it.
Rahm’s a savvy guy - he saw the writing on the wall and got out
I doubt he really needed so much to be in Chicago a few weeks early — it was a pretext to disassociate himself from the meltdown for the DC Demagogues
“France: “The Germans just didn’t understand how the Maginot Line was supposed to work.””
ROFLOL! Excellent!
And now we know the architect of the “throw ‘em under the bus” policy! Rahm threw ‘em under the bus now that they serve him no more purpose.
Well I don’t think Rahm was ever all that ideological - not like Obama. Rahm is probably a capitalist and a Clinton democrat. Run to the left in the primary and run to the middle during the general. Anything to win. Pure unadulterated ambition rules. When Obama turned out to be too much of an ideologue, Rahm bolted.
